Team Biggy

Team Biggy Official page for South Sound Speedway Mini Stock driver Derek 'Biggy' Vetter.

"Team Biggy" started out as making fun of a street racing gang back in high school that called themselves something like "team insanity". My nickname all through elementary, middle and high school was "Biggy", so naturally my actual race team's name became "Team Biggy". 12 years later the name's still going strong! The first ever Mini Stock Nationals at the Fall Classic has come to a close. I don't think the Yakidega officials realized what they had coming when 72 mini stocks showed up! With that many cars we really could have used a weekend all to ourselves, but the Fall Classic was never meant to be about the mini stocks.

I was able to run two practices Friday and with a few minor changes the car wasn't too bad. The bigger challenge was learning best line around the long bumpy track. The South Sound Speedway mini stocks were definitely down on power compared to most of the other cars, but some of us were still pretty quick.

I didn't qualify very well with the car sliding all over the place. This put me pretty far back in the B main. In the B main I started working my way forward, but I ran out of laps. I finished 14th in the B main, but I think the car was probably a few spots better than that if we would have had another caution and/or a few more laps.

I would have really enjoyed running more laps, but it ended up being a pretty good weekend. We didn't break anything, got to run at the longest and fastest track I've ever been to and we got to watch some pretty good racing.

I really need to thank Tyson and Delanie for their awesome hospitality and my longtime sponsors of Pe Ell Country Market and The O'Neill Family. I also need to thank Kurt Parker and Kevin Pegg for spotting for me and Kalen Robinson for always helping out wherever needed.

Another scheduling conflict came up so I will have to miss this weekend's race. I will also have to make a decision next week on racing the season finale at South Sound Speedway, or to skip the season finale to make sure the car is ready for the Yakima Mini Stock Nationals at the beginning of October.

I had some pretty high expectations for yesterday's race. The car has been running well, and the setup is getting closer. Every change I made during practice got the car closer. I didn't qualify very well, but it was still about .12 seconds faster than any lap I turned during the previous race.

After watching several other cars have starter issues, I caught the bug right before the heat race. After having a push start, the car ran fine during the heat race, but it was extremely loose off the corner.

After a couple adjustments for the main, the car was still a little loose for the first 1/3 of the main, felt pretty good for the middle 1/3 of the race and then got EXTREMELY loose for the final 1/3. I was really hoping for a good finish so I was pretty disappointed. On the bright side I didn't run into or break anything so at least I'm able to make forward progress for the next race.

It was great having my wife helping out in the pits. I know she doesn't always enjoy coming to the races, but I really enjoyed getting to spend the day with her. And she puts up with me, so that's always worth a thank you!

Congrats to Kevin Conway on the win. If he keeps this up he'll have to quit playing the underdog card!

The car is all ready to go, but I've been sick all week and with the iffy weather I've decided to call it for the day. Tomorrow's looking better, so as long as the weather holds for tomorrow, we'll be racing tomorrow night.

Last night was pretty uneventful. The car has plenty of power, now I need to get the handling figured out. It was extremely tight during practice and I got it better by the time the main came around, but it still wasn't where I needed it. I had a few close calls with cars spinning in front of/next to me, but I managed to not hit anything and, for the first time in awhile, I drove the car on the trailer at the end of the night.

Congrats to the 66 crew on their first ever win in dominating fashion! They're a great group and they're always fun to be around. The win was well deserved.

My string of bad luck continues... The car was finally running well, and I got a chance to work on some handling issues. The car was finally running well and by the last practice I thought I had the car handling pretty well. During qualifying the clutch started slipping immediately so I pulled off.

I tried a couple band aid fixes and started the heat race. The car took off pretty well at the beginning of the heat race and I pulled a pretty good lead when the first caution was thrown. The last corner before the caution the clutch slipped a little again. When I took the green after the caution the clutch slipped pretty badly and that ended my night. http://youtu.be/t1Iq53KTo2M

It was only a two race old racing style clutch so that's a little frustrating.... I suppose you live and learn which vendors to work with.

I probably had my biggest cheering section ever last night and I really hoped to put on a good show for them. Thanks to Mark and Debbie Vetter, Debbie's family, Austin, Kevin and Dorothy Smith, Laura, Monica and Ryan, Zach Harger and his buddy, Lindsey and Mason Porter in the stands and Aaron Porter in the pits. Also thanks to Kevin and Charlene Pegg, Kurt Parker and Kevin Conway for all of the help over the past couple weeks and the excellent hospitality in the pits.

I'll get it fixed up and be back out hopefully better than ever in two weeks.

I actually had the car ready early enough this week to make Thursday practice! I thought I had all of the problems fixed when I left for the track, but the problems resurfaced.

Special thanks to Kevin Pegg, Kurt Parker and Kevin Conway for helping me narrow it down to the carburetor and helping me get it fixed up well enough for this weekend. Now I should be able to work on the handling Saturday instead of just trying to get it to run.

The car may have only been really slow running on only 3 cylinders, but it looks pretty good in still pictures :)

Well yesterday did not go like I had expected. I knew what I had with the hobby stock since I practiced it on Thursday so I only ran a few laps of practice and otherwise didn't really touch the car all day. I led a couple laps of the heat race before getting out of the way of a couple more aggressive drivers. My goal was to drive the car onto the trailer at the end of the night and getting knocked into the wall doesn't help that goal. In the main I settled into a rhythm, saved some tires for the later part of the race and was able to pull off a 5th place finish. The car still doesn't drive very well, but I was pretty happy with the performance.

The mini stock on the other hand was giving me grief. I have a miss halfway down the straight stretch that I can not seem to figure out. We worked on the car all day trying all sorts of stuff. The car was handling pretty darn well, but I just do not have any power. I finished everything, but the car was flat out slow... I will keep fighting, but it sure is frustrating.

Practiced Gary Mckay's car today in preparation for running double duty on Saturday. When you're used to having a light car without power steering, a big heavy car with power steering drives a little different :)

I'm hoping to bring his car home with a good solid finish running my own race, and I'm going for broke in the mini stock!
