Passing this along:
Hello, my name is Larry Berg; I am the Michigan Chair of the American Brain Tumor Association’s BT5K walk/run and Sneaker Recycling Campaign.
We are hosting our annual fundraising event on Sunday May 15th @ Kensington Metro Park in Milford MI. We will also be collecting used Sneakers for Recycling.
I am not sure how much you know about brain tumors; so I thought a brief overview may be helpful:
There are over 700,000 Americans currently living with a brain tumor diagnosis, and nearly 80,000 people (28,000 kids) will be diagnosed with a primary brain tumor this year. Sadly, it is expected that almost 16,000 people will lose their battle to a brain tumor this year and Brain Tumors are the second leading cause of cancer related deaths in children 0-14. Ten years ago, my daughter at the age of 11 was one of those American’s who received a Brain Tumor diagnosis on Martin Luther King Day. MLK said, "The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy." These are words that my daughter Kaitlyn has lived by since this diagnosis and a proud Dad moment; she is now successfully working as a wealth analyst with Northern Trust in Chicago.
This is why we started the Michigan ABTA BT5K; to bring hope and support to others who are suffering from this disease. In an effort to raise awareness & critical funds for brain tumor research and patient services.
Our Sneaker Recycling program supports our environment as over 200 million pairs of sneakers end up in landfills annually. Those shoes take over 30-40 years to decompose, while emitting CO2 all along. In addition, there are more than 600 million people worldwide who don’t own a pair of shoes.
Your generosity is critical in helping us to advance the understanding and treatment of brain tumors while saving the planet one shoe at a time!
If you can’t attend the race; we can also have you be a drop off point for sneaker collections from your club!
If you have any questions or I hope interest to support the BT5K and the world sustainability, please feel free to contact me at [email protected] or 734-634-9275
Thank you very much for your consideration and I look forward to hearing from you.
