I get asked all the time, “Why Connemara ponies?” Well, today was a perfect example of why I just love these ponies: I have not been well. Freddie has just been hanging out with the exception of one 20 minute “ride” a week and a half ago, where I took a short hack on the trails while a friend walked next to me, because my balance was still off. Otherwise, he’s been out of work and munching on the lovely green grass. Today, I just hopped on for a hack. No “lunging the sillies out first”. I just tacked up and climbed aboard. The trails were completely obliterated by the strong storm we had on Saturday, so we made our way to the field and hacked out in the open. There aren’t too many young horses I’d feel comfortable hopping on after weeks off and riding out in the open, but all of my young Connies have been just like this. They just have the best brains. Did he snort at a downed tree and take a few jiggy steps? Sure. But he stayed right between my hand and leg and I never felt concerned. I have lost a ton of muscle mass and feel quite compromised and weak, but I just felt so innately safe on him. THIS is why I love Connemaras. They have the most sensible brains, paired with sturdy, athletic bodies and they can jump the moon! (You better believe I’m desperate to get back to the galloping and jumping, but in the meantime, I’ll take that trusty brain, so I can take slow hacks while I get better!) Yes, dear Freddie will be available at some point, but first, I have to get myself in working order. We’re getting there. Slowly 🙂 Thank you all for your patience and grace as I wade through my “This Didn’t Go As Planned” year.
