Turkey season is fast approaching, just a reminder to those that haven’t harvested a bird yet or those that are just now getting into turkey hunting - you don’t need TSS, you don’t need Bottomland or Sitka, you don’t need a Benelli or a Browning, you don’t need to be the guy that could show Dave Owens up with a mouth call, you don’t need a 1,000 acre lease.
You know what you need?
Persistence
Patience
Knowledge
A shotgun or bow
A call (whatever you think you sound best with)
3 of those things on that list can’t be bought, so now what do I do?
Your love for it after hearing that first gobble will help you with persistence
Your love for it after hearing one spit & drum @40 yards without you making a move cause you’re so nervous, that’s where your patience runs thin but you learn from it.
Knowledge is power in any situation, the more information you have on your targeted species, the easier it is to remain consistent locating and harvesting birds. Whether it be habitat, movements, feeding, you have the knowledge to know where turkeys are and will be.
Small tip I have learnt from a few years of chasing them - you have your gun in your lap, birds at 30 yards, you can’t throw up to shoot real quick because you set your decoy out wrong and now all 3 of you are inline with each other, if you move a inch he will putt and be gone… *wait for him to blow up, in that millisecond it takes him to go from half strut to strut he’s blind (don’t know if it’s true or not, but hasn’t ever failed me yet.. old school guy told me that one day and I’ve never had one fly away unless it was to turkey heaven) move as quick as possible to get your gun up and bead up on him. *HE CAN SEE WHILE IN FULL STRUT, this only works in the transitioning phase from half strut - full strut.
Thank you for your continued support and happy hunting this spring 🦃
