Due to inclement weather and risk of hail and tornadoes, we are canceling classes this evening. As I type this, there is a report of a tornado just north of us, and there is more bad weather headed our way from the west.

Be safe, and we'll see you in class on Saturday.

We had a small but mighty class tonight. Five advanced students braved the humidity to work a whole lot of kata and kihon and get a good sweat. Great job, everyone!

What a great day at the dojo! Students displayed a lot of power and a variety of techniques to test their skills at Break Day. We're super proud of all of these students, whether they broke a board for the first time or stepped up their game from last year.

Thank you to all of the families and friends who came out to support them! A crowd always makes it more exciting for the students.

Thanks as well to the students who participated in the annual Walking for Amy event in Roanoke before class! Several of us braved the morning heat and humidity for the two-mile walk, and congratulations to Jason Roach for completing the 5K run! We appreciate the support for an event that's dear to our community and contributing to a great cause, the St Jude Children's Research Hospital. Much appreciated!

Break Day tomorrow! Hope to see you there. Here we have one last inspection by Quality Control.

And done! I was able to work around and with my shoulder issue by changing up weapons and techniques. Tim and Senpai concentrated on Bo but finished with sai with me. Mr Oliveri had to leave after 60, unfortunately, as he's pet sitting for friends this weekend.

With our small group we burned through them quickly. We didn't take our usual lunch break, just a quick breather after 50 to stretch my shoulder a bit.

Next challenge is 100 Karate Kata for World Karate Day!

We have an opportunity to learn about the tijikunbo/chizikunbo or "fist bo" later this Summer, so we thought we'd take a shot at making a handful of these loaded-fist weapons. It's surprising how often martial arts training turns into arts & crafts.

We weren't shooting for anything fancy, which is good, because I'm definitely not a carpenter. We started with some inexpensive maple dowels, which we took to the wood shop at work to cut in half and buff down the edges. We drilled a couple holes and used some paracord (left over from re-wrapping sai handles) for the finger loop.

They probably would have worked fine at that point (second photo), but I worried the white maple would just get gross with sweat and dirt, so I decided we should fancy them up with a stain that just happened to match our supervisor's fur coat (pictured).

And done! For now. The loop knots are just held by friction, so they'll be easy to adjust to different finger sizes or replace with different string after we do some testing and get some feedback.

I fully expected to mess up a few, but I think they're good enough for prototyping. I may even test them out in the dojo tomorrow!
