🔥 Sock Burning Tradition – Opening Day at RYC 🔥

It was Glenn Smyth Sr. who brought this tradition to RYC in 2015 during our Sesquicentennial celebration—and it’s been a favorite ever since!

The tradition comes from Annapolis, where sailors have been burning their winter socks for nearly 50 years to celebrate the start of a new boating season.

We’ll be continuing the tradition tomorrow at Opening Day!
Bring a pair of socks to toss in the fire as we say goodbye to winter and welcome back sailing season 🔥⚓

In Annapolis, Md., people gather each year to usher in the warmer weather by burning their socks. The springtime tradition is the unofficial start of the Chesapeake Bay sailing season.

Where did the summer go? Here's the start to the last race of the season for the RYC Lightning fleet last night. Beautiful breeze, exciting, close-quarters skills to get the bow of the boat juuuust to the line before the horn sounds and then floor it! The combined expertise of these crews is a marvel to see in action. Enjoy - and if you've ever wanted to learn to sail, there will be adult sail classes next year as usual. Think about it!

Flying the replica 1865 swallowtail burgee at the masthead today because - it's RYC's 160th birthday! Our mascot ospreys Tack and Gybe seem unimpressed but we think 160 continuous years of sailing is pretty special. The raptors continue as usual to bomb the area with fish parts both fresh and, ah, processed. We believe there are also two chicks up there, count not fully confirmed.

The swallowtail design was the original, replaced by the pennant style in the 1890s for reasons lost to time. The usual six foot long pennant will be back tomorrow.
