Here at R.A.C. we have a renewed interest in our property here at 476 D and H avenue in Riverside, PA. We have owned it for 10 years and have basically used it for stockpiling and storage for our contracting business and as parking and storage for our Outfitter equipment.
Before we bought it, it was the Nooning House Restaurant, and lots of folks will tell their stories of dinners and drinks at that establishment back when Merck was an economic driver in Riverside.
But what about before the restaurant? Well, it turns out that it’s harder to find out much about those times, but we are getting closer. It was definitely industrial, and there are remnants of that time still on the property. We sometimes dig up cable or parts of old conveyor belts when we are digging.
Some say, it was an unloading location for one of the boats they called The Hard Coal Navy that dredged coal out of the river, and then sold it for heating people’s homes. As we go forward here at RAC we want to celebrate that past, and embrace it, and capture it for future generations to explore and consider.
I followed a tip from someone I was talking to who told me that they moved the coal operation that used to be here, down the river about a mile or so…so I went exploring. And since it’s on private property, I won’t give you the location, but what I found, was the grandson of the guy who used to run this boat, and the rest of the gear that made the Hard Coal Navy work. Barges, and steel trail rails that were used to pull the boats out of the water to unload them. Really cool (but no longer functional) history of this part of the river.
Documenting this part of our properties history is going to be an ongoing effort here at RAC and we have some cool ideas on how that might all work. We will keep you in the loop as things progress, but we want to do this heritage proud going forward…
