MONTOUR PRESERVE UPDATE

To be honest, we are dragging our feet a little bit in regard to opening the Montour Preserve Kayak Kiosk location. Let’s be honest here, it’s been kinda nasty outside. And the river has been high, and the ground is real mushy, so we haven’t rushed to get open…to have no sales. May is always a slow month for the kayak rentals anyway, so from our perspective…we aren’t really missing anything.

But, we will be bringing the kiosk to the Preserve this week. And we will again be staffing the weekends. So if you have something coming up, don’t worry…we got you!

Also, if you need something in the meantime…just call or email, or post here. We can make arrangements for groups at any time.

RIVER ADVENTURE THIS FRIDAY EVENING.

It’s going to be a mind and body experience with Jess of Soulsentials. About a 1 hour paddle, followed by options for a bonfire, hanging out, making new friends, sound bowls, and other forms of mindful activities.

Do it all, or do just the parts that interest you. Lots of options and price points to chose from by clicking on the link.

Hope to see a good group of adventurous folks for Friday!

A short paddle on the moonlit Susquehanna River, followed by a friendly fire and some friends on the banks of the river. Bring your own post paddle vibrations and share with your new friends.

RAC Nation,

Today was the first day that I looked at the river and thought to myself, “you know, it might not be a bad day for a paddle.“

- The weekend’s coming.
- The weather looks OK.
- Unfortunately, it looks like river levels are coming up. (See graph)

If anybody wanted to go out on the river this weekend, we could have a conversation about that. typically we will take groups at 8 AM and 2 PM.

No promises, but maybe. It has to be safe.

THIS PUSSMAN IS LIVING DANGEROUSLY AT R.A.C.

With rising waters, water temperatures still around 48º, and weather in the 50º range, you need to know the rules about hypothermia, Mr. Kittyman:

The "Rule of 100" regarding hypothermia is a cold-water safety guideline stating that if the sum of the air temperature and water temperature (in degrees Fahrenheit) is less than 100, there is a significant risk of cold water shock and hypothermia.

This rule serves as a threshold for when paddlers and boaters should wear specialized thermal protection, such as a wetsuit or drysuit.

Key Details Regarding the Rule of 100:
The Calculation: Air Temperature + Water Temperature = Total.
Safety Threshold: If the sum is below 100, you are at risk. If it is significantly lower, you should wear a wetsuit or drysuit.

Alternative Rules: Some cold-water safety experts prefer a stricter "Rule of 120" for higher safety margins.

Key Consideration: Even if the air is warm, the water temperature dictates the survival risk.

We post this today, because we all want to get out on the water, and I am sure we will get a few calls tomorrow. When I tell you “no”…this is the reason.

*NOTE* - No kittens were harmed in the making of this post.

Here at R.A.C. we have a renewed interest in our property here at 476 D and H avenue in Riverside, PA. We have owned it for 10 years and have basically used it for stockpiling and storage for our contracting business and as parking and storage for our Outfitter equipment.

Before we bought it, it was the Nooning House Restaurant, and lots of folks will tell their stories of dinners and drinks at that establishment back when Merck was an economic driver in Riverside.

But what about before the restaurant? Well, it turns out that it’s harder to find out much about those times, but we are getting closer. It was definitely industrial, and there are remnants of that time still on the property. We sometimes dig up cable or parts of old conveyor belts when we are digging.

Some say, it was an unloading location for one of the boats they called The Hard Coal Navy that dredged coal out of the river, and then sold it for heating people’s homes. As we go forward here at RAC we want to celebrate that past, and embrace it, and capture it for future generations to explore and consider.

I followed a tip from someone I was talking to who told me that they moved the coal operation that used to be here, down the river about a mile or so…so I went exploring. And since it’s on private property, I won’t give you the location, but what I found, was the grandson of the guy who used to run this boat, and the rest of the gear that made the Hard Coal Navy work. Barges, and steel trail rails that were used to pull the boats out of the water to unload them. Really cool (but no longer functional) history of this part of the river.

Documenting this part of our properties history is going to be an ongoing effort here at RAC and we have some cool ideas on how that might all work. We will keep you in the loop as things progress, but we want to do this heritage proud going forward…

THE FIRST OF FOUR OVERNIGHTERS WE WILL BE OFFERING THIS YEAR. The date is May 1st weekend.

This first one is a little different than most.

- We are capping it at eight non-RAC people.

- It’s a SCOUTING TRIP for us. What that means is we have never paddled this section of river before. It’s actually the ONLY section of the west branch we haven’t paddled. Therefore, we ONLY want very strong paddlers who know how to pack and navigate and can be fully SELF SUPPORTED OUT OF THEIR OWN BOATS.

- because we aren’t offering our normal level of safety and support, we are only charging for the transportation and the benefit of our planning. Effectively, anyone who goes along is paying for the privileged of our setting up camping places, and the ride there and back…and shuttle. THE REST WILL BE ON YOU with no promises.

This is all spelled out more clearly on the page, but I just wanted to be very clear here, what this trip is, and is not. We can’t make any promises on a section of river we have never paddled before. But I am guessing…it will be fun.

Karthaus to Renovo is a remote section of the West Branch of the Susquehanna river that is in the PA Wilds. Great beauty and solitude await those few who paddle this lovely section of river during the few months it’s easily navigable.

Since today seems to be the day for introductions, say “hello” to Jim Black. He is also a new member of the R.A.C. Team, and like Sheri, he too will be helping primarily with our overnight offerings this season.

If you have ever done any larger group events with R.A.C., you have probably already met Jim. We typically call him in as a “hired gun” when we could use some extra muscle and expertise for our larger groups.

Jim is already working full time at Geisinger, so we feel grateful that we are able to share him with the medical world from time to time.

Not to mention I have personally been friends with Jim for most of my 20+ years in the region. So it’s nice to be able to officially announce him as “taking the next step” in our long term relationship, and becoming our male guide for our overnight adventures.

We are going to be making some exciting announcements in coming days. Here is the first…

R.A.C. is pleased to introduce you to Sheri.

Sheri and R.A.C. have talked about working together for years, and we have cross promoted each others offerings…but we never really made it official…until recently.

R.A.C. is happy to announce that Sheri is one of the highly qualified outdoor enthusiasts we will be utilizing for our overnight paddling adventures we are offering this year. The first trip will be May 1st from Karthaus to Renovo on the West Branch! (More on that soon).

So, WELCOME SHERI!

Looking forward to fun, beautiful, amazing times on the river this year!
