Ohio farmland carries a kind of inheritance most people don't think about until it's paved over. Generations of families have worked the same soil in counties like Wood, Madison, and Darke, corn and soybean rotations passed down like heirlooms, black dirt that took the state's glacial history thousands of years to build. Once that ground gets buried under a solar array, it doesn't come back to farming easily, if it comes back at all.
Ohio's already living this tension in real time. Utility-scale solar projects have been proposed across the state's prime farm belt in recent years, and rural counties have pushed back hard, packing township meetings and county commission hearings over fears that thousands of acres of productive cropland could disappear under glass and steel for decades. Farmers who've spent their whole lives rotating crops on that ground aren't excited about trading it for a 30-year lease and a fence line.
Meanwhile Ohio's got no shortage of pavement doing absolutely nothing useful. Every Kroger, every Meijer, every mall ring road and stadium lot sits baking in the sun most of the year, already connected to the grid because the buildings next to them need power anyway. Retrofit those lots with solar canopies and cars get shade in July, the grid gets clean power without new transmission lines, and not one acre of Darke County corn ground has to go under permanently.
The economics aren't identical, and that's worth being honest about. Flat ground-mount solar on open farmland is cheaper to install than elevated canopies over a parking lot, and that cost gap slows adoption when it's parking lots versus fields. But Ohio doesn't have to treat this as one-size-fits-all either. Marginal or already-degraded farmland can support agrivoltaics, panels and crops sharing the same acreage, without sacrificing the richest soil the state has. Save the prime ground for what it's always done best, and let the pavement finally start earning its keep.
