Got bored and decided to run a little rib experiment. 😅🔥

I cooked **3 racks of ribs, 3 different ways** just because I was curious and wanted to see how much difference the cooking method really made.

One rack was cooked with **actual cherry wood**, one was done on the **pellet grill**, and one was cooked in the **oven**. Same general idea, same goal — just three different approaches side by side.

And honestly? For all the people and YouTube videos saying pellet smokers give you just as much flavor as real wood… I’m calling it now: **actual wood wins, and it’s not even close.**

The cherry wood ribs had the best flavor by far. Deeper smoke, better character, and that real wood-fired taste you just don’t get the same way from pellets. The pellet grill rack still turned out good, and I’ve definitely gotten better color on my pellet smoker before, so I’ll admit the presentation there was probably user error this time.

The oven ribs looked nice too and had that saucy, glossy finish, but flavor-wise they obviously didn’t have the same smoke depth.

Final verdict: all three were edible, but the **cherry wood ribs were the clear winner**. Pellet grills are convenient, ovens work in a pinch, but real wood smoke takes it by a mile.

JULY THUNDER

Old folks in the mountains always paid attention to July thunder. They said every rumble in that hot month would come back around as a sharp frost in December. A quiet July meant an easy winter. A noisy one meant you better stack your wood high and keep your boots by the door.

People would sit on their porches in the thick heat, counting each roll of thunder like it was a warning sent ahead of time. Not out of fear, but out of respect. The land always gave a hint if you were willing to listen.

July storms had a way of shaking the windows and stirring up the dust, but the old ones said that sound carried farther than summer. They believed it echoed forward into the cold months, marking the nights when the frost would bite hard and the air would feel sharp enough to crack.

It was a simple kind of knowing. Listen now, prepare later. Let the sky tell you what it plans to do. Mountain folks never needed a calendar for that. They just needed the thunder.

Oak and hickory are two of the highest-rated, premium hardwoods for firewood and cooking.
