Do your joints keep you from getting a good cardio workout? Running is great for cardio, but it can wreak havoc on our knees. Thankfully, RFFC has a solution for getting that cardio high without damaging your joints – the Adaptive Motion Trainer (AMT). It may look like an elliptical, but it has a wider array of movement capabilities. To get started, you have to step onto the pedals and begin striding to “wake up” the display. You can keep your arms stationary or incorporate them by using the handlebars. The real variety is in the stride, though. Without needing to push buttons, you can seamlessly shift from short to long strides to stair-stepping and anywhere in between. The bouncy motion cushions your joints, helping prevent impact injury. Altering your stride length and height can help you target different muscle groups as you improve your cardio routine. The display screen allows you to increase or decrease resistance while keeping you aware of your current stride type. Stop by the gym today and see if the AMT can boost your next workout!

Triceps are some of the most under-appreciated arm muscles. Most people admire a good bicep bump, but the back of the upper arm doesn’t get the same notoriety. However, these muscles are essential - whether you are trying to create an impressively toned arm, or you just need it to be easier to get up or accomplish overhead tasks. The tricep dip machine can assist you in achieving these goals. Take a seat and press your back against the backrest; place your hands on the handles, palms down. Keep your elbows close to your sides (no chicken wings here!). Now, press the handles toward the floor. Adjust the difficulty by moving the pin in the weight stack to your right. Three to four sets of 10 reps is a great start to toning those triceps!

Does “6-pack” make you think of buying drinks? If so, let me give you another definition: abs. Those frequently undercover muscles hold your internal organs in place and allow all your other muscles to function effectively. All exercises have their stabilizing basis in your core muscles, which include your abs. Take a seat on one of our ab machines to start exercising them and maybe even make them stand out! Each ab machine has handles to hold and foot supports so that you can then pull your upper body toward your knees. Use the pin to select a weight that is moderately difficult, and focus on using your abs, not your arms, to repeat the “crunch” motion for 3 or 4 sets of 10 repetitions. One of our ab machines has the option to rotate the seat and crunch to the side to work on your obliques (side muscles). Keep up with these exercises and soon you’ll have a 6-pack that isn’t in bottles!

Age, disability, injury, and ignorance are all common excuses to avoid going to the gym. Thankfully, we have equipment and staff to overcome all these obstacles! There are several machines that are particularly effective for dealing with these obstacles – one of which is the recumbent elliptical. It mimics the motion of a traditional elliptical while allowing for a safer, seated position. Foot pedals and handles work in conjunction with each other to keep the body moving in a synchronized manner. Resistance can be adjusted if you need a more strenuous workout. Recumbent ellipticals are great options for anyone struggling with obesity, recovery from health issues, or age-related muscle deterioration. Don’t let anything stop you from exercising – keep moving! You can do it! Ripley Family Fitness Center can help!
