Same lecture I gave students all week leading into the WCWS

The Women’s College World Series is one of the greatest classrooms in softball if you’re willing to pay attention.

Don’t just watch the home runs. Watch how these women carry themselves when the lights get stupid bright. Watch the body language after a strikeout. Watch the way they attack the next pitch after an error. Watch how they respond when 12,000 people are losing their minds around them.

Anybody can celebrate success. The real lesson is hidden in the struggle.

Watch the pitcher who just gave up a bomb and still demands the ball back. Watch the hitter who punched out twice and still steps in the box believing she’s the baddest player on the field. Watch the teammate in the dugout who keeps bringing energy when her name isn’t being called.

That’s the stuff that gets you here.

The WCWS isn’t built on talent alone. It’s built on thousands of reps nobody saw. Early mornings. Empty cages. Missed parties. Sore bodies. Failure after failure after failure until eventually the game starts giving something back.

So if you’re sitting in those stands dreaming about being on that field one day, don’t just be a fan.

Study them.

Steal their habits. Their toughness. Their resilience. Their confidence. Their swagger.

Because if you want to stand on that field one day, understand this:

The hard work isn’t over when you get there.

The hard work is what gets you there.

And damn… every second of the grind is worth it when your cleats finally hit that dirt 🩷

🥎In fastpitch softball, confidence can rise and fall quickly. One inning you’re crushing hits, making plays, and feeling unstoppable. The next inning you strike out, miss a ground ball, or give up runs in the circle. It’s easy to think you have to be perfect to succeed.

But Jesus never said we need perfect faith. He said faith as small as a mustard seed is enough.

A mustard seed is tiny-one of the smallest seeds there is. Yet when planted, it grows into something much bigger than expected. That’s how faith works in sports and in life. God doesn’t ask athletes to have giant confidence in themselves. He asks them to trust Him, even in small moments.

Faith on the softball field looks like:
• Stepping into the batter’s box after striking out before.
• Encouraging a teammate after an error.
• Trusting God when the score isn’t going your way.
• Competing with courage instead of fear.
• Remembering your identity is bigger than stats, wins, or losses.

The strongest players are not always the most talented. Often, they are the ones who keep believing, keep working, and keep trusting God when things get hard.

A tiny seed of faith can change the atmosphere of a dugout, a team, and even a game.

📣Message to Players

Girls, softball will test your confidence. There will be pressure, mistakes, tough losses, and moments where you doubt yourself. But remember this: God never called you to be fearless — He called you to have faith.

Even a little faith can help you:
• swing again after failure,
• compete under pressure,
• lead your teammates,
• and keep going when things feel impossible or you may not make a team.

Your value is not found in your batting average, ERA, errors or whether you make a certain team. Your value comes from who God says you are.

Play hard. Compete with joy. Trust God in every pitch, every at-bat, and every inning.

Because sometimes the smallest faith creates the biggest impact.

“God, thank You for the ability to play this game. Help me trust You in pressure, adversity, and competition. Give me confidence, humility, and courage. Teach me to encourage my team mates and play for Your glory, not just for wins. Grow my faith, even if it starts as small as a mustard seed. Amen.”
