Everyone had a great time at the 2026 King Street Intermediate Chess Championship! This week 20 students competed in a rigorous 4 round tournament. Guilherme O. finished with a perfect 4.0 score, three players with 3 wins were recognized with gold medals, and five players with 2+ wins were awarded silver medals. But all players were excited to participate at their first tournament, play competitively, and displayed great sportsmanship and passion for the game. There was also excellent participation from the community, with many parents helping the tournament director run the tournament, and cheering for all players. More photos and video available at tournaments.wayoftheboard.org. Special thanks to KSI principal Dr. Kristina Hislop and school staff for supporting the event and their students!

The 2026 SRMS Spring Chess Championship was a massive success! This past Tuesday, 20 students competed in a rigorous 4-round tournament. We are proud to announce our winner, Hunter C., who finished with a perfect score. We also celebrated 5 Gold medalists and 6 Silver medalists for their outstanding performance under pressure. All players grew as chess players, exercised their critical thinking skills, showed excellent sportsmanship, and had fun. More photos and video available at tournaments.wayoftheboard.org.

Special thanks to and Mr. Brendan Leslie for providing the students with this enrichment opportunity!

There were 20 players who competed in the 2026 Hawthorn Spring Championship after school, with beginner and intermediate sections. Alex H. won the beginner section with a perfect 4-0 score and 12 players, and as did Charles F. in the intermediate section with 8 players. The tournament began at 3:30 PM, and ended at 6 PM. The gameplay at a tournament with many young and beginning players is different, as more explanation is needed and some players may not fully understand the game. But learning is a process, and by starting at an early age and with support, the players will continue to progress.

Winning is important, but equally important are the skills necessary to become a better chess player. These include perseverance, critical thinking, emotional resilience, patience, and the desire to win. Coincidentally, these are critical skills that help a player in other areas of life as well.

Tournaments results, video, and more photos can be browsed at tournaments.wayoftheboard.org. Myself, Mr. Edelson, and the parents watching are very proud of how all players performed.
