What an honor it was to surprise Mrs. Rice with her inclusion in a beautiful mural at CarMax Park, created by the incredibly talented Ed Trask.
The mural, located in The Landing in left field, is entitled, "The Flying Squirrels are Richmond, VA." As a member of the Richmond 34, an educator, activist and our ambassador, Mrs. Rice has made a lasting impact within our organization and community.

About the Richmond 34
On February 22, 1960, students from Virginia Union University peacefully protested at Thalhimers Department Store in downtown Richmond. They sat at a whites-only lunch counter and demanded to be served. When they refused to leave, 34 students were arrested and charged with trespassing.
Their bravery played a major role in the desegregation of Richmond and helped shape the Civil Rights Movement as a whole.
Many people are still unaware of this important chapter in our city’s history, and we hope to expand awareness of the courageous men and women who changed history forever.
