Artable Project provides an opportunity for individuals confined to wheelchairs to express their insight, emotion and experience through art, resulting in powerful and vivid artistic expression. Artable Project is inspired by a program called Artistic Realization Technologies (A.R.T.) founded by artist Tim Lefens in 1995 after witnessing the power artistic expression can have for those with physi
cal disabilities. Lefens provided guidance and coordinated training for the startup of our program here in Richmond. Artable Project uses studio assistants called “trackers” assist the artist, serving as their hands throughout the creative process. An interactive communication process empowers both verbal and non-verbal artists to take ownership of the artwork as they select canvas size, paint color, the brush or tool used to apply the paint, and the composition of the artwork. The volunteers of Artable Project are proud to carry forward this process of allowing individuals with limited control of their limbs and limited ability to speak the chance to be empowered and express their insight, emotion, and experience on canvas.
