Richmond Aikido Kai

Richmond Aikido Kai Aikido, an effective martial art not relying on strength or violence. All are welcome! We Practice Takemusu Aikido.

Directly translated, this means “The Way of Harmony Born (or Created) from Conflict.” Our goal is to learn a response to conflict that is constructive, not destructive - regardless of the form the conflict takes. To do this, we train the mind as well as the body, and we cultivate a community of others who are doing the same. To create harmony from conflict, we need all of these tools: sound mind,

capable body, and supportive community. If you have not practiced clearing your mind of noise and clutter, you will struggle to respond constructively to assaults on the mind. Until you discipline your body to sleep enough, eat enough, relax unneeded tension, and move with control, you may not respond constructively to attacks on the body. And only when you habitually practice building your community, can you expect to draw on your community in times of need.

As we say goodbye officially to our dojo of 20+ years I am so grateful to all my instructors, students and friends who proved the aikido concept that through practice we become family. And we made some pretty cool signs too

As we say farewell to our amazing fan location, I thought it would be nice to measure our years by our merch! I semester VCU students would attend the Dojo to try out Aikido and we would try out new designs and colors. So much fun, so many memories. We continue classes starting at Pine Camp cultural arts center on Tuesday. Hope to see you there.

Sad news to share, the dojo location that we have been at is closing after 20+ years, we are so grateful for all the instructors and students who passed through.

The good news is we are starting up classes immediately at Pine Camp arts center. I will post a link for the registration.

For any past students who still have their bokken/jo and want to pass them to the next generation we are putting together a class set or better come by and get back to practice.

Thanks for the amazing instruction from Ethan Weisgard Sensei, visiting Aikido In Fredericksburg.

In aikido we practice for the likelihood of multiple attackers. We practice the sword to train our bodies to move, engaging from a place of safety, mobility, and empowered action.

Our Story

Iwama Style Aikido which includes weapons (Jo & Bokken). Monthly dues are $60. Classes are taught at 5:30 pm on Tuesday and 6:00 pm on Thursday nights and Sunday morning at 10 am. Our sister dojos in Virginia regularly offer seminars which we actively participate in. Richmond Aikido Kai is a member dojo of The Takemusu Aikido Association recognized as a qualified Aikido organization by the Aikikai Foundation, Aikido World Headquarters, Tokyo, Japan. This recognition enables the Takemusu Aikido Association to obtain internationally registered and recognized ranks for qualified students of its members.

Aikido is often referred to as moving Zen and is a gateway to mindfulness practice. It is said that the martial arts are not about self-defense but about defeating the self. Aikido explores the cognitive biases we have about self-defense and attempts to redefine our awareness and our response to the world.

All our welcome to attend any class to observe or participate in order to help one determine if this way is the one that suits your needs.
