Why should you be in the room for NAWBO Richmond's Women's Empowerment Summit and Expo?

I attended the Expo & Summit last year, and this year I'm coming back as co-chair. 🙌🏾

Last year, the Expo gave me the chance to really get to know the wealth of women-owned businesses in our area, especially within our own NAWBO chapter. I found a few brands at that Expo that I still use to this day.

The Summit was energizing and insightful. I walked away with tools I still use on coaching calls, a to-do list to strengthen my own business, and a few simple, practical ways to boost my referral system.

This year, I'm excited for the sheer wealth of knowledge that will be in that room. 👇🏾

✨ Visibility Panel: We're going beyond the typical social media tips. People are craving breaks from their screens, so we need marketing that lives beyond the feed too.

✨ Business Sustainability Panel: I'm ready to think ahead and make my business Future Ready, even when I don't fully know what "next" looks like yet. Time to delegate and make sure my business has a plan, with or without me in every room.

✨ Advocacy Panel: I'm ready to understand what's actually happening for women business owners locally and nationally, and learn how to advocate for my business more intentionally.

✨ Personal Sustainability Fireside Chat: This one's a favorite. I already know my wellness impacts my business, but I'm always looking to deepen that practice.

✨ And we're thrilled to welcome Dr. Omega Wilson as our keynote speaker this year. 30+ years in leadership, from the classroom to the boardroom. 🎤

First time back at HQ ✹ Richmond Coworking, Corporate Off-Sites & Private Meetings since my summer break, and it feels so good. Oh how I've missed this place.

Walked in to stunning natural light, pleasant tunes, and some smell good that someone had in the air lol.

Grateful for spaces where I can come for a change of scenery, familiar faces, and space to spread out and get to it.

Shouts to Rocco Fridge for my hydration station 😆. Totally not necessary for life, and totally makes me smile every time I see it.

Some mornings my brain wants to sprint before my feet even hit the floor. Anxious thoughts, a running worry list, that frantic "go go go" energy before I've even said good morning to myself. 🌀

I'm learning (still practicing, not perfected) to meet those mornings differently.

Here's what it looks like lately:
🖊️ Brain dump everything that's going well + what I'm grateful for (Shouts to my Aunt for this beautiful journal I can pour blessings into.)
📖 Devotional time
🧘🏾‍♀️ Stretch and/or a meditation, depending on the day

It's not about doing it perfectly. It's about choosing reflection and grounding over rushing and reacting.

This morning's affirmation from the deck said exactly what I needed:
"I set clear boundaries and nurture my inner peace."

Turns out my whole routine is just me practicing that boundary before the day gets a chance to talk me out of it.

When was the last time you actually looked up from the screen? 👀

Not to check another notification. Just to check in.

Stretch those legs. Roll those shoulders. Take a sip of water. Give your spine a "hey, how you doing."

Sustainable leadership isn't a big dramatic overhaul. It's this. It's the one minute pause. It's resting before you're running on empty. Assessing your well-being doesn't wait for the burnout, it happens in these tiny in-between moments, over and over.

So this is your sign. Get up. Stretch. Hydrate. Breathe. Even 60 seconds counts.

Sometimes you just need a change of energy.

A change of scenery.

My new scene is Sarah & Co Cafe this week. ☕

Don't minimize the power of your surroundings on your motivation, concentration, and creativity.

And if you can't shift from where you are, what can you bring into your space to create the shift you need?

That could look like a specific mug with your favorite tea, a plant, a trinket, and being intentional about taking even the smallest of breaks and using those for things that bring you delight or pause.

My Assess Your Well-Being principle calls on us to listen to our body, mind, and energy so we can be responsive to our needs.

As we get practiced at responding to our needs, our mood shifts and our capacity increases, even in the midst of challenges.

Strong, effective, and sustainable leadership is fueled by our increased self-awareness and community care. 🫶🏾

This past week, I presented to my largest audience yet and made my biggest Abuntu card deck sale since launching. And today, a family milestone: my daughter's first day of preschool.

How much do you grow in half a day?

The The Henrico Economic Development Authority and Minority Business Development put on an outstanding Next Level Business Summit today and I gained insight and wisdom from every speaker on stage.

Being a wise and effective business owner requires me to stay connected, create space for continued learning, and evolving my practices to meet the moment.

I'm walking away ready to:
📋 Refresh my business plan so it can be a management tool and compass
🏠 Continue building my house (the business) on solid foundation, while thinking creatively about ways to delegate and outsource tasks that are taking me away from visioning and critical business growth tasks
⏰ Assess my new fall schedule to ensure I've built in blocks of work time for business logistics so I'm not the barrier to progress

Thank you to everyone who shared their time and talent 👏🏾 And such a treat to be with such glowing women at my table.

I'm even more excited to head into Monday's planning meeting for NAWBO Richmond upcoming Women's Empowerment Expo and Summit in September. Let's keep the learning and growing in community going, Richmond.

The amount of items on this week's to-do list is just... Trailing!

And, I pushed back against the initial urge to sit in front of the screen from sun up until sun down.

I started with my devotion, then went on a long walk with the Little One, including an impromptu breakfast at RVA Cafe x Blasian.

I'm proud of myself for prioritizing the fresh air, the movement, and connection time. I would have been bummed to miss the gorgeous morning we had.

We made it home, and I got to work, prepping my list for the week and getting started with my first tasks.

And I did so without resentment and frustration. By centering my wellness and starting my day off connecting my mind, body, and heart, I made room for the capacity I need to push through today's heavy load.

Sometimes the thing you don't think you have time for, is the very thing you need to move through the challenge ahead of you.

Take a breath. A few deep ones. Assess what your mind and body need, and then gift yourself that moment of intentional nurturing. There's a blessing on the other end.

Flash back to last Saturday, which still has me smiling. 🥰

I got to speak at and vend at Nicole Coley Williams' Balance and Boundaries brunch, and it was everything.

The room was full of good food, good people, and Nicole led us through such a needed conversation about boundaries and creating space for ourselves.

I got to share something I talk about often but love revisiting: your own rest and restoration menu.

Just like you'd order off a menu, what are the go to options you reach for when you need to recharge? A 10 minute walk. A favorite playlist. Calling a friend who gets it. Having that list ready means you don't have to think hard when you're depleted, you just choose.

So grateful I got to be in that room. Carrying these lessons with me all week. 🫶🏾
