Most coaches use training zones every day.
But how many can clearly explain what stands behind them?
In conversations with coaches, I often hear:
“Training physiology is not my strength.”
That’s perfectly fine.
But here is the real issue:
👉 Do you actually know what your zones represent?
👉 And how they guide your swimmers’ daily work?
Most answers point to testing—lactate, thresholds, heart rate.
These are often treated as the “gold standard.”
But here’s the problem:
Different systems define zones differently—while using the same names.
So the same zone may mean different things…
and lead to different results.
And when definitions are mixed inside one program, the outcome is predictable:
• unclear targets
• inconsistent adaptation
• results that are hard to repeat
Clarity starts with understanding what stands behind your zones—and how they are defined.

Question: How do you define your zones?
Training paradigms define your decisions and framework. 3S is the latest and universal paradigm that will allow you to improve your planning and results.
