Hello everyone in the Southside Community

I am here to announce that Minnesota Youth Rugby has decided that it will be going forward with having a high school rugby season this spring! As you can assume, this season will operate quite differently than it has in the past. On behalf of the coaching staff, I would like to present the new protocols and safety precautions that will be put in place to try and minimize the risk of COVID-19. We understand that these precautions are not perfect. Minnesota Youth Rugby has been working with healthcare workers from Allina Health and guidance from the MN State High School League to develop a set of best practices that all teams will implement. At this time, we are looking to our current players and their parents for any input or concerns that they may have about playing rugby this spring. Please, if you have time, fill out the following form and submit it online. We understand that some of these precautions increase the burden that parents and players will have to bear to play this spring; we are committed to helping out with these as much as we can. We plan to have a virtual parents’ meeting in the next two weeks to discuss further how the season will work and answer any questions that you may have. If there are other interested players or parents, please feel free to invite them to attend this meeting or directly reach out to me.
2021 Season Protocols / Changes
- All members of the coaching staff will complete the World Rugby COVID-19 safety course as well as be trained in the USA Rugby Coronavirus Return to Play Protocol before the start of the season
- The health insurance coverage offered by Minnesota Youth Rugby that offers supplemental coverage in case of injury will not cover any treatment for COVID-19 or any complications that may result from COVID infection. All players, and a parent/guardian for players under 18, will have to sign a liability waiver before participating in any team activities. Once MYR has finalized this waiver, I will make it available to everyone.
- Before all in-person team activities, players will have to have their temperature checked by a member of our staff and will have to fill out and sign a symptom checklist that we will keep on file
- If there is a positive case reported on our team or on a team that we have competed against recently, we will immediately suspend in-person team activities for two weeks.
- Any information provided to the coaching staff about a positive COVID diagnosis or possible exposure will be sent out to all parents and players as soon as possible. Any personal information about COVID diagnosis or testing constitutes private medical information, and personal identifying information will not be shared with anyone.
- Players will not be allowed to carpool to or from any in-person team activities with non-family members; unfortunately, this means that players and parents are responsible for providing transportation this season
- All team equipment will be cleaned and sanitized before use
- Wearing face masks will be required at all times unless players are on the field participating in a drill or game. Face masks will be required for all coaches, reserve players, referees, and spectators at all times.
- Regular COVID testing is encouraged though not required for participation
- Practice “pods” will be capped at a maximum number of 25 people; if this becomes necessary, we will provide more information on these logistics
- All team practices will be closed to non-team members who do not have prior permission
These protocols may be subject to change as the situation develops. We will do our best to keep everyone informed of any developments as they happen.
