🎉 Celebrating 50 Years of CAVOC! 🌲

The School District of Rhinelander invites the community to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Cedric A. Vig Outdoor Classroom (CAVOC) on Saturday, September 26, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at CAVOC, 4321 S. Shore Drive.

CAVOC's story began in 1976 when the School District of Rhinelander and the Samoset Council of the Boy Scouts of America exchanged 80 acres of land, giving the District a total of 160 acres at what is now CAVOC. Over the past 50 years, countless students, staff, volunteers, and community members have helped make CAVOC an outstanding environmental education and recreation center. 🌿

The anniversary celebration will offer fun for all ages, including facility and grounds tours, nature walks, scavenger hunts, acorn collecting, art projects, wood cookie activities, a chili contest, photos with Smokey Bear and the Hodag, a playscape, and a campfire with s'mores. CAVOC merchandise will also be available. Food and beverages will be provided free of charge.

The celebration will be held in conjunction with the 3rd Annual Run for Our Heroes 5K Run/Walk, presented by the Rhinelander High School FBLA/DECA Club.

After visiting CAVOC, attendees are also encouraged to check out the Food Pantry Harvest Hoedown at the Pioneer Park Historical Complex from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The Harvest Hoedown is a separate community event and is not part of the CAVOC anniversary celebration, but it offers another fun way to enjoy the day.

The CAVOC anniversary celebration is free and open to everyone. Come celebrate 50 years of learning, exploring, and making memories at CAVOC! We hope to see you there! 🌲🎉

Winter’s not over yet! ❄️ Wednesday Night Nordic was amazing with more fresh snow falling! This group ski is for all members of our community to enjoy the outdoors and ski! Six of our MS/HS athletes joined in and we love to see it. Skiers enjoyed some roasted marshmallows and hot drinks after!

Extra thanks to Robin for grooming! Our groomers are amazing!

Thank you Charter Next Generation - Rhinelander (CNG) for the generous donation that enabled our club to purchase a power generator that our middle school and high school Nordic ski teams uses at ski races. The generator also provides the power for our timing building at CAVOC. Thank you for your community support!

An amazing end to an incredible winter! ❄️

The club hosted a family fun day and we had an awesome turn out with athletes from the high school and middle school teams and SnoDags, coaches, family and friends. Some of the activities included race the Hodag, relay races (on a lovely 400m loop, thank you groomers), slalom racing, and Nerf biathlon.

The day was topped off with hot chocolate, lemonade and cookies. 🍪

Huge thanks to the club and Rusch family for putting this fun event together!

The Community Trails have witnessed their last grooming for the season. Thanks to all who went out and enjoyed them... it makes a groomer happy!

Our official close to the season at our banquet! We celebrated our amazing senior Kayla, sending Coach Wood off into coach-retirement, all the amazing accomplishments and memories of our athletes, and the life of Brian Hegge in our first season without him. Reminiscing on the past, memories of the season, and goals for the next were all discussion topics. This group of people is truly full of so much love, joy, kindness, and passion; we are like one big family.

We had a delish buffet style dinner, presentations, speeches, and indeed a few tears were shed. This season wouldn’t be possible without the all amazing parents, families, and friends! 🎉

SnoDags wrapped up their season tonight with their very own Olympic Games. They have experienced a great season.

Northwoods Nordic Ski Club thank all the volunteers who make this program possible… there are many of them! Without you, this program would not exist.

Thanks to Brian Anderson for stepping in and leading the organizational side of the SnoDags program.

Finally, thanks to the many families who shared their children with us. We will hopefully see you all out on the trails.
