Northern Dutchess Rod & Gun Club

Northern Dutchess Rod & Gun Club Founded in 1933, Northern Dutchess Rod & Gun Club is an organization of sportsmen, sportswomen, and their families, who enjoy outdoor pursuits.

The club exists primarily to provide our members with hunting, fishing, target shooting, hiking, and a quality outdoor experience with the opportunity to meet and socialize with others who also love these pursuits. The club embraces the principles of ethical management and harvest of wildlife and other natural resources. We are open throughout the year for many public events including our annual m

aple syrup making demos & pancake breakfast, trout derby, and game dinner. We also offer shooting events throughout the year such as 3D Archery, .22 Woods Walk and Steel Plate Shoots, and hunter education classes. We're involved in our community! We host an annual blood drive with the American Red Cross, host fishing programs at nearby Camp Ramapo for their campers, sponsor Boy Scout Troop 228, we've adopted a section of Route 308 for highway cleanup, and host the annual wildlife exhibition at the Dutchess County Fair.

Day 66: Thank you to the Northern Dutchess Rod & Gun Club. The NDRGC has operated and maintained the Wildlife Exhibit since 1933. The exhibit offers insight into reptiles, birds and fish with an emphasis on sharing the many activities offered to sportsmen and sportswomen. They also offer airsoft, archery, hatchet throwing and a live fishing tank! Be sure to check out this wonderful exhibit during Fair week. Thank you so much for being an important part of the Fair!

Have you seen turtles crossing roads or laying eggs lately? We have some nosy small turtles who love to "help" when we fish in the club's pond!! 😉🐢

On this last day of Wild Turtle Week, we want to remind you that wild turtles belong in the wild, and pet turtles belong in responsible homes (aka NOT in the wild)!

Did you know it's illegal in New York to A) collect turtles from the wild or B) to release pet turtles into natural habitats? Taking wild turtles can harm native turtle populations, especially because many species reproduce slowly and are already facing many threats, such as habitat loss.

Releasing pet turtles is also a problem. Turtles have very complex needs and a long lifespan, which can lead to people abandoning them when they outgrow their small tanks. Releasing a pet turtle, or "setting it free," can do more harm than good for the animal and for the area it was released into. Many dumped pets don’t survive, and those that do can introduce diseases, compete with native wildlife, and disrupt local ecosystems. For example, the red-eared slider turtle (pictured here) is a popular pet and is now invasive on every continent except Antarctica!

If you or someone you know can no longer care for a pet turtle, contact a local reptile rescue, animal shelter, or wildlife agency for guidance. And if you see a turtle in the wild, the best thing you can do is admire it from a distance and leave it right where you found it.
