"This is my personal understanding and reflection after studying Jitte. I continue to learn and welcome insights from senior instructors and fellow Karate practitioners.
🔥JITTE (十手) – The Strength of Calmness
Jitte (十手), meaning "Ten Hands," is commonly interpreted as the ability to face multiple opponents or attacks coming from different directions.
As one of the traditional Shotokan kata, Jitte belongs to the Jion–Jitte–Jiin family, emphasizing stability, strong defensive principles, and mental composure.
Key characteristics of Jitte:
• Defense is its foundation.
True Karate begins with awareness, self-control, and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
• Strong and stable stances.
Jitte develops balance, a solid center of gravity, and powerful techniques generated from proper body mechanics rather than muscular strength alone.
• Multi-directional awareness.
The kata trains practitioners to respond efficiently to attacks from different angles while maintaining control and composure.
• Power through precision.
Rather than relying on speed alone, Jitte emphasizes timing, accuracy, stability, and effective technique.
My personal reflection:
"To me, Jitte is not about defeating ten opponents. It is about remaining calm when facing countless challenges. When the mind is steady, the techniques naturally become effective."
Karate begins and ends with respect.
