Today, Rensselaer Professional Firefighters Local 2643 joins our brothers and sisters across the fire service in remembering the 2,977 lives lost on September 11, 2001.

We especially honor the 343 members of the FDNY who answered the call that morning and made the ultimate sacrifice. Their courage, selflessness, and commitment to others continue to define what it means to serve.

We also remember those who have lost their lives in the years since due to illnesses related to their work at Ground Zero, and we stand with the survivors, families, and first responders who continue to carry the weight of that day.

Twenty-five years later, we remember their names, their sacrifice, and the unity our nation showed in the days that followed.

Today, we recognize the hardworking men and women whose dedication, skill, and sacrifice have built and continue to strengthen our communities.

As proud members of organized labor, we honor those who came before us and fought for the wages, benefits, safety standards, and working conditions that working families rely on today.

While many enjoy a well-earned day off, firefighters, first responders, healthcare workers, and countless others remain on duty—ready to serve their communities around the clock.

We still have several openings for this fantastic training opportunity. All proceeds will go to benefit Albany Battalion Chief Wayne Brennan who was burned in an explosion at a city fuel pump.

New tools=more training!!

Our members have been newly up fitted with another piece of equipment. The FAST board. Eric from FAST Rescue Solutions was on hand today to review multiple different was to remove a downed firefighter and/or fire victims. This new tool gives us another option on both the fire ground and technical rescue.

Thank you to the Chiefs office for continuing to provide our members with the equipment to support our community.

Over the last month members completed natural cover firefighting training as part of our required annual training requirements. Members discussed real life scenarios with areas prone to fire within the city. Members also had the opportunity to review tools commonly found with firefighters who extinguish large Wildland fires. A huge thank you to Gary Gibbins for the knowledge and experience!

EMERGENCY DELARATION - CITY OF RENSSELAER

Mayor DeFrancesco has issued an EMERGENCY DECLARATION FOR the City of Rensselaer due to the heavy rains and the threat of flash flooding, effective immediately, Wednesday July 29, 2026, through 7:00 a.m. on Thursday July 30, 2026, unless it is extended or revoked.

Drivers are urged to avoid all unnecessary travel during the emergency, and check road conditions and closures before traveling.

Please be advised that travel in areas of the City of Rensselaer may be EXTREMELY hazardous with some streets impassable. Please avoid Route 9 & 20 in the vicinity of lower Columbia Turnpike; areas of 6th Street near Hollow Park, and any areas with a creek or stream nearby.

Low lying areas near the Hudson River are likely to be impacted by an unusually high tide.

Do not attempt to drive through pooling water. Turn around, don't drown!
