I have been putting off officially making this post for several reasons. The LegaCy name is very important to me, and I truly appreciate everyone who fished with us under that name and made us one of the top charters on the upper Hudson. As we have transitioned to Lake Ontario it was brought to my attention there were several charters with very similar names. So wanting to separate ourselves from the crowd I wanted to rebrand with something people won’t forget. Hence the birth of Blue Doggie Sportfishing. I am asking all our loyal clients and supporters to please check us out on our Blue Doggie page, and please get ahold of us for a trip on world famous Lady O. I promise you will not be disappointed.
Thank you for the support and as always FISH ON 🎣

Do you fish for striped bass in the Hudson River?

If yes, then this post is for you and requires your immediate attention!

πŸ—£ Effective May 1, regulations for striped bass caught in the Hudson River and tributaries north of the George Washington Bridge are changing! A striper may only be kept if they are between 23 - 28 inches long. The Hudson River striped bass fishing season and bag limit remains unchanged, with targeted angling allowed between April 1 and November 30, and a one-fish bag limit.

This action was taken in response to the large increase in the coastal recreational harvest of striped bass in 2022, and repeated years of poor reproductive success in the Chesapeake Bay.

If you fish for striped bass in marine waters or in the Hudson River and would like to participate in important striped bass research that helps biologists understand and manage the fishery, then sign up to be a ! For more details, head to our website: https://on.ny.gov/3QscdO1.

🚨 Due to the warm winter, steelhead are ready to spawn early this year! Salmon River Fish Hatchery (in Altmar, Oswego County) staff have been keeping an eye on the steelhead in the fish ladder. We checked earlier this week and the females are nearly 70% ready to spawn!

β„πŸ§Š As long as there is no snow and ice, we will open the hatchery to the public to watch the egg collection process in the mornings starting this Thursday, March 14. As well as Friday, March 15, and Monday, March 18 (Note: No weekends!). The egg collection process typically runs between 9:30 AM and 12:00 PM. After March 18, be sure to call the hatchery (315-298-5051) to make sure we are still collecting eggs as the steelhead egg collection is shorter than the Pacific salmon collection in the autumn.

Depending on weather and other factors, the hatchery may close after the egg collection finishes and reopen Monday, April 1 (Not an April Fools!).

🐟πŸ₯š Egg collection for steelhead is a different process than egg collection for Pacific salmon in the autumn. Steelhead do not die during the process, they are held for a short recovery period and then released back into Beaverdam Brook and the Salmon River to return to Lake Ontario. Steelhead can spawn two or three times in their lives, unlike Pacific salmon that only spawn once.
