“Frustrating evening last night at the Waskish Town Hall as more than 100-200 people packed into a space meant for half that many. Listening to the reactions and the questions about what to do about the land grab bills in the house and senate.
If you are a sportsman or woman who enjoys hunting or fishing in the Upper Red Lake area. You need to contact your senator and representative and ask them to oppose HF 4780 and SF 5080.
Here a few things to consider. This bill, if passed will mean the end of the Big Bog State Park, no more campground, no more Waskish Homestead Park, no more public boat landing on the Tamarack River. No more Hunting in the Red Lake State Forest. No more berry picking, no more fishing trips with friends and family.
That's the tip of the iceberg. How about the farmers who will likely lose control of being able to manage their farmlands as they have for decades, how about the economic impact to the schools and communities when the county loses revenue from the timber sales (estimates of $300k a year), what about the business that operate and depend on the tourism dollars the area brings? Private property values will drop, thus reducing county revenue even more when tax values and revenue drops as a result.
This is a land grab attempt, to gain control of all of Upper Red Lake, this doesn't have anything to do with sacred lands. Call, write, or email your state lawmakers in both the house and senate NOW. Call MN representatives Stauber, Klobuchar and Smith too. Call the Governor, remind him that the State Lands are meant for ALL TO USE! Call the Beltrami County Commissioners! At every level they need to know that this impacts people in ways that aren't obviously visible on the surface.”
