Today I had the honor of giving Evelyn her first stripe on her purple belt, and I couldn’t be more proud of her.

Evelyn puts in the work. She shows up, trains hard, listens, learns, and constantly pushes herself outside of her comfort zone. Nothing about her progress has been given to her, she’s earned every bit of it.

One of the things I respect most about Evelyn is that she never looks around the room trying to find the easy roll. Most days she’s surrounded by guys who are bigger, stronger, or heavier than she is, and she doesn’t shy away from any of them. She steps onto the mat, ties her belt, and gets after it.

That’s one of the most empowering things about Jiu Jitsu. The mat doesn’t care who you are. It teaches you to trust your technique, your toughness, your intelligence, and yourself. Evelyn is a great example of that.

And believe me, fellas… if you see Evelyn walking toward you when it’s time to pick partners, don’t think you’re getting an easy round. 😂

Congratulations on that first stripe, Evelyn. I’m extremely proud to be your Professor, and even more proud of the Jiu Jitsu practitioner you’re becoming.

Keep working. You earned it. 🥋💜

EARNED. 🥋⚫️🔴

Today was a great day for our JJM/148Jiu Jitsu family.

A huge congratulations to Professor Dave Massey, who was promoted to 1st Degree Black Belt today by Professor Weich.

Getting a black belt is already something very few people will ever accomplish. But earning that first degree means something different. It represents the years that came after the black belt—the continued training, teaching, learning, sacrifice, and commitment to the art when there was no longer a belt color left to chase.

That’s what longevity in Jiu Jitsu looks like. Professor Dave has put in the time, stayed on the mats, continued to grow, and continued to give back by teaching. Today, Professor Weich made it official.

Proud to stand beside you, Professor. Congratulations on a milestone that was truly earned. The belt may be black, but the journey never ends. 🙇🏻‍♂️🥋

Mom and Dad are on the mats training, learning, struggling, laughing, getting better… while their kids are right there watching it all, and that matters.

Our kids learn a lot more from what they see us do than what we tell them to do. They’re watching their parents choose something difficult. They’re watching them stay active, challenge themselves, be humble enough to learn, and keep showing up.

And the best part? You don’t have to choose between family time and Jiu Jitsu. Bring the family with you. ❤️🥋

At JJM/148, we want the academy to be a place where the whole family feels at home—even the little ones hanging out on the sidelines waiting for Mom and Dad to finish rolling.

Someday those little eyes watching from the edge of the mats might be the next ones tying on a belt. Set the example. Your kids are watching.

THIS is what kids’ Jiu Jitsu should look like. 🥋❤️

What an awesome class today at 148 Jiu Jitsu! The mats were packed, the energy was high, and most importantly — there were a whole lot of happy faces!

Yes, we teach Jiu Jitsu. We teach technique, discipline, respect, confidence, and how to become comfortable in uncomfortable situations.

But they’re also KIDS… and kids need to have FUN!

So after putting in the work today, we finished class with a little JIU JITSU BASEBALL! ⚾️🥋😂

The yelling, the laughing, the competition, and especially the smiles were exactly what this academy is supposed to be about.

Some of these kids may become champions. Some may train for years. Some may simply look back one day and remember the friendships they made and how much fun they had on these mats.

ALL OF THOSE ARE WINS. ❤️

I’m proud of every one of these kids and incredibly grateful for our coaches and families who continue to make 148 Jiu Jitsu such a special place.

Train hard. Have fun. Be a good human being.

🥋 STRONG GIRLS. CONFIDENT GIRLS. FUTURE LEADERS. 🥋

There’s something special about seeing young girls step onto the mats and learn that they are stronger and more capable than they realize.

Jiu Jitsu teaches them how to fall and get back up. How to stay calm when things get uncomfortable.
How to solve problems instead of panic. How to be confident without being arrogant.
And most importantly, how to believe in themselves.

For little girls especially, learning that they can protect themselves, use their voice, establish boundaries, and stand their ground is something they can carry with them for the rest of their lives.

We aren’t just teaching these girls armbars, escapes, takedowns and submissions.

We’re helping raise strong, disciplined, confident young women who know they can handle hard things.

Someday they may forget a technique we taught them, but I hope they never forget the feeling of walking onto these mats and discovering just how POWERFUL they really are. ❤️🥋
