Why spend time working toward higher-level skills when you could just stick with a version you're already good at?

Because eventually, the version you’re comfortable with may stop being challenging enough to keep making you fitter.

Ring rows are a great way to build pulling strength. But if you stay with those forever, at some point it won’t provide enough stimulus for improvement. Working toward a pull-up, chest-to-bar, or muscle-up gives you a reason to keep building more strength, coordination, body control, and range of motion.

There’s a benefit for your brain too.

Learning a new skill forces you to pay attention, process feedback, make adjustments, and keep trying when you don’t immediately get it. That becomes especially important as we get older.

In the Synapse Project, adults ages 60–90 spent three months either learning demanding new skills like digital photography and quilting or participating in more familiar, less challenging activities. The groups learning the difficult new skills showed better improvements in episodic memory.

That doesn’t mean getting a muscle-up is some magical defense against aging, but it does support the idea that continuing to learn difficult things is good for us, both physically and mentally.

You don’t need to master every single movement in the CrossFit world, but you should still always have something you’re working toward. This can be frustrating at times, but know that the process is just as important as the end goal.
