Training Load builds mitochondria. Intensity makes them work better.

Most trail runners are only training one side of this equation.

Comment “Free” to sign up for my FREE newsletter breaking down exactly how to train both.

What’s the biggest mistake/challenge you see or have with multimodal/hybrid training?

One of the biggest mistakes I have made as a runner is push through pain on a workout day.

If you’re like me and have experienced foot or ankle pain, the day of a hard workout then pushed through it, typically the result is more pain or soreness afterwards.

The best fix to avoid this?

Don’t run!

Instead get on the bike or do something unloaded, this will allow you to build your cardio while unloading the joints and allowing them to recover.

What’s been your biggest “hack” to avoiding injury?

Comment PR if you want a step by step guide to create your own personalized training plan!

Different race distances occur at different intensities. Because of this, the way we train and develop different physiological characteristics must be different to accommodate.

For example, you wouldn’t train the same way for an ultra as you would a 1 mile race. At least you shouldn’t and would not get optimal results if you do.

Instead you need to focus on least to most specific physiological quality and build your training plan accordingly.

Determine what trait is closest to your race and focus on that before your race, the least specific focus on that the furthest out. Now morph your training to get more specific as you get closer to race day.

Comment PR to learn how to apply this directly to your next race.

Your training phases or what you focus on at different points of the season should change based on what your target race is.

And more specifically how long that race is. Different races will occur near different physiological landmarks.

Therefore, you should set up your training year to focus on those different landmarks at different times.

You need to program your training from least to most specific.

Shorter races will focus more on vo2max later in the year. Longer races will focus on zone 2/3 training, and moderate races will focus on threshold 2 development as the race approaches.
