That’s a really fancy way of saying more is not always better.

How exercises are structured and sequenced together matters. The resistance you work against matters. Your alignment and breath within each exercise matters.

Yes, moving your body in general is always a good thing. Motion is lotion. But if you really want to experience long-lasting progress in your Pilates practice then simply going to a reformer class and going through the motions may not be right for you.

At SSP, we focus on individualized training in the Pilates method so that your practice grows with you and evolves with you as you go through life ~ pregnancy, injuries (unfortunately inevitable), emotional stressors, job changes, kids, family, etc. Our goal is to help you feel your best so you can keep doing the things you love.

Trends are fun and moving your body in any way is a good idea but if long-lasting results are your goal, trend chasing won’t get you there.

Feeling back extensions in your lower back 😣

When we teach extension in the studio we emphasize length over height. It’s not about how big your back bend is but more about the length you maintain in your spine as well as the connections we utilize to support the spine during extension. Your core and seat are key to providing support to your lower back during back extension.

We practice back extensions all around the studio for a VERY long time before attempt Swan on the reformer. The various equipment in the studio teaches us about where we might be compensating or where we need a little more strength so that by the time we hop on the reformer for the Swan, all the pieces are there and its possible.

We will be diving into this systemic way of practicing in our upcoming workshop, The Road to Swan. If you’ve been wanting to add back extension or improve back extension in your practice, this workshop is especially for you!

With its small footprint, the Wunda Chair is a great place to challenge your strength and stability. Unlike the Cadillac or the mat, there is not a lot of surface area to rely on when working on the Wunda Chair.

Practicing the Swan on the Wunda chair shows us if we have the core strength, connection to our seat, and a developed two-way stretch. If we don’t, we will feel it in places we shouldn’t.

But the Wunda Chair is also a great place to find your “dive” in the Swan. If you’ve been wanting to improve your Swan on the mat, this is a great place to work on that.

Swans around the studio 🦢

When you practice Pilates as a system, utilizing the various pieces of equipment in the studio, you build connections block by block. Then, just like a sturdy house, your body, your structure is prepared to take on more load or more advanced work because the foundation is solid.

Working through the system helps you work smarter not harder.

It’s all just Pilates 😉

We have amazing equipment in the Pilates method that are like nothing else in the fitness world. While they are individual pieces they are actually not meant to be used as isolated pieces. Every piece of equipment is part of the greater system we call Pilates. Every piece teaches you something about how you compensate, hold tension, grip, and connect and disconnect.

We use multiple pieces of equipment in a session to learn more about our bodies so we can improve our strength, mobility, and overall connection.

If you’ve never had this type of Pilates experience - being on multiple pieces of equipment in one session- come try a foundations class! We’d love to share this amazing full method with you.

The Road to Swan…ladder barrel edition

This is one way we utilize the system of Pilates. The swan exercise on the reformer is one of the most advanced extensions in the repertoire. Building up to is on other pieces of equipment is essential so that correct connections and muscles patterning can be learned.

Here are two ways we learn swan on the ladder barrel and at what “level” of practice you might learn them in.
