Today, the Red Wing Booster Club has the privilege of honoring someone who has made an extraordinary impact on countless students, athletes, and families throughout our community.
He served as a 6th grade math teacher and head volleyball coach, shaping not only successful teams, but successful people. With 401 career wins and multiple section title game appearances, he became the winningest volleyball coach in Red Wing history. But if you ask him, the wins and records were never what mattered most.
What mattered most were the students.
Even after retirement, his commitment to others never slowed down. He still continues tutoring students during and after school, substitute teaching whenever needed, helping with Hispanic Outreach activities, mentoring young kids in math, and giving his time back to the varsity volleyball program. Today, his impact has come full circle, as he now helps coach the daughters of some of his former players. Current student athletes love having him in the gym. He brings a different kind of energy that the girls gravitate to and want to be around. He even worked as the head groundskeeper at the Athletic Field for many years, earning less than minimum wage simply because he cared and took pride in keeping the field looking pristine
Former players describe him best. One said:
“He wasn’t just a coach, he’s a very well-respected person. He taught you so much more than just the game. It wasn’t always all about volleyball, it was about life.”
That is the true measure of his legacy — not just victories, but values. Not just teaching lessons in math or volleyball, but teaching lessons in character, humility, service, and life.
Today, we proudly recognize an outstanding teacher, coach, mentor, and volunteer whose impact will be felt for generations.
Please join me in recognizing and thanking Neal Newman for everything he has given to Winger Athletics and to generations of students throughout our community.
It’s my honor to give our Booster Club Outstanding Winger Award to Neal Newman.
