1) What has been the highlight of your senior season?
** One of the biggest highlights of my senior season was team bonding at the beginning of the year. We took a trip to Spring City, then went out to eat at Fuji where we attempted to prank Aaron by singing happy birthday (even though it backfired and he just got a free brownie). It was one of those days that reminded me how much fun cross country can be outside of just running. The memories and jokes from that trip also really set the tone for the rest of the season.
2) What is your favorite course that you've ran (excluding State) over your XC career? Any reason why?
** One of my favorite courses over the years has been the Palmer course. Although many runners dreaded Palmer, I personally enjoyed having to watch out for holes, runner through sand and avoiding poison ivy markers because it adds a lot of entertainment to the race. Also, there is something peaceful about being surrounded by nature and being separated from crowds. Since most cross country races are on golf courses, it's nice to have a change of pace at least one time in the year.
3) What was your least favorite practice, knowing that when you came that day, it was going to be a long day?
** Any practice involving hill sprints was my least favorite. After six years of cross country, you’d think I would have figured out how to properly run up a hill, but sadly, hills always found a way to humble me. It's definitely the kind of day you just had to mentally power through.
4) What makes running for Ravenna XC fun and unique that you might not find in another XC program?
** What makes Ravenna XC truly special is the strong sense of community and family that runs through the entire program. From day one, you feel like you are a part of something bigger than just a team. The coaches do an amazing job creating a supportive and encouraging environment where everyone feels valued, no matter your experience or speed. It's that feeling of belonging that really sets Ravenna apart.
5) What do you believe has helped make you so successful as a XC runner and what has this program taught you in terms of life?
** This program has taught me that your attitude matters just as much as your performance, if not more. As a team leader, I’ve come to realize that my mindset can impact the people around me, and choosing to show up with positivity and encouragement can be just as powerful as a fast time.
6) What is your best memory from being a member of the XC team and what will you miss most about being a part of this team?
** One of my favorite memories has to be going to State my freshman year. It was honestly shocking to see how many people from the community made the trip to UNK just to support our team, and I’ll never forget the feeling of being surrounded by so much encouragement. What makes it even more special is that I still talk to and meet up with my teammates from that year. That sense of family and connection is what I’ll definitely miss the most in cross country. Your teammates see you at your absolute worst (hot, sweaty, and sometimes in tears), but they’re always there to support you.
7) What advice do you have for the younger runners on the team or someone who wishes to go out for XC?
** Focus on being consistent, having a good attitude, and supporting your teammates. Most people wouldn’t even fathom running 3.1 miles (and a lot more in practice), so just showing up and giving it your best is a success in and of itself. You don’t have to win races to make a lasting impact.
8)What are your post-graduation running plans? Will you run in college? Will you attempt a marathon one day? Will you never run again? Etc.
** After graduation, I plan on running casually, mainly to maintain good physical health. While I don’t plan to run competitively in college, I hope to stay active by participating in a few half marathons a couple of times a year. Running has been a big part of my life, and I want to keep it as an enjoyable habit without the pressure of competition.
9) What legacy would you like to leave behind as you look back on your experience?
** Although it's a bit cheesy, running as a type one diabetic has definitely presented some unique challenges over the past few years. I’m honestly proud of myself for never giving up, even when things got tough, and I hope that other students who face their own obstacles feel motivated to at least try to get out there and run. If I can leave behind a legacy, it’s that perseverance and attitude matter more than just talent.
10) Is there anyone you would like to thank?
** I’d like to thank Mr. Ellis and Mrs. Zinnell for being such incredible supporters throughout my time on the team. Cross country has been one of the biggest parts of my life for the past six years, and I’m beyond grateful for the support my coaches have given me through all of my awkward phases. Cross country is 100% a mental sport, and without coaches who genuinely care and believe in you, it would be so much harder to keep pushing.
11) Anything else you would like your fans and community to know?
** No.
