✅ DISTRICT INVITE ✅

While it wasn’t necessarily a surprise, it didn't come any easier that our season ended at Districts. As expected, McCool Junction and Nebraska Christian dominated, accounting for about half of the individual qualifiers and both full teams on the boys and girls side. We have great respect for those programs, but it certainly makes competition tough. Many qualifiers are underclassmen, so D-4 will stay stacked for years if we remain there. There’s talk of a Wild Card system, which could be great for the sport as Class D continues to grow stronger. The bright side is that state qualification feels even more special now.

The weather mirrored last year; warm and windy. Without the gusts, I think we’d have seen a few more PRs. Our goals were to beat last year’s times and placings, and while we didn’t check every box, the effort was outstanding.

The girls showed real unity and progress all season. Maleah led as usual, and Josey had her best race since last season. Her leadership and dependability have meant everything to this team, and she’ll be deeply missed. She’s the kind of athlete every coach hopes to have: dedicated, encouraging, and dependable. Aubree and Kloee were close to PRs but held back slightly by the wind.

For the boys, competition was fierce. Brendan and Wyton battled through the race, with Wyton finishing his career on a strong note. In two short years on the team, he’s gone from “hating running with a passion” to being one of our most positive and reflective runners. Aaron and Quentin both set PRs. Aaron finally broke 25:00, a goal of his all season and Quentin dropped over a minute off his best time. If he stays healthy, he could be a real sleeper next year. Cody rounded out our lineup, pushing through a tough day with impressive grit.

Until next season, Go Jays!

1) What has been the highlight of your senior season?
** One of the biggest highlights of my senior season was team bonding at the beginning of the year. We took a trip to Spring City, then went out to eat at Fuji where we attempted to prank Aaron by singing happy birthday (even though it backfired and he just got a free brownie). It was one of those days that reminded me how much fun cross country can be outside of just running. The memories and jokes from that trip also really set the tone for the rest of the season.

2) What is your favorite course that you've ran (excluding State) over your XC career? Any reason why?
** One of my favorite courses over the years has been the Palmer course. Although many runners dreaded Palmer, I personally enjoyed having to watch out for holes, runner through sand and avoiding poison ivy markers because it adds a lot of entertainment to the race. Also, there is something peaceful about being surrounded by nature and being separated from crowds. Since most cross country races are on golf courses, it's nice to have a change of pace at least one time in the year.

3) What was your least favorite practice, knowing that when you came that day, it was going to be a long day?
** Any practice involving hill sprints was my least favorite. After six years of cross country, you’d think I would have figured out how to properly run up a hill, but sadly, hills always found a way to humble me. It's definitely the kind of day you just had to mentally power through.

4) What makes running for Ravenna XC fun and unique that you might not find in another XC program?
** What makes Ravenna XC truly special is the strong sense of community and family that runs through the entire program. From day one, you feel like you are a part of something bigger than just a team. The coaches do an amazing job creating a supportive and encouraging environment where everyone feels valued, no matter your experience or speed. It's that feeling of belonging that really sets Ravenna apart.

5) What do you believe has helped make you so successful as a XC runner and what has this program taught you in terms of life?
** This program has taught me that your attitude matters just as much as your performance, if not more. As a team leader, I’ve come to realize that my mindset can impact the people around me, and choosing to show up with positivity and encouragement can be just as powerful as a fast time.

6) What is your best memory from being a member of the XC team and what will you miss most about being a part of this team?
** One of my favorite memories has to be going to State my freshman year. It was honestly shocking to see how many people from the community made the trip to UNK just to support our team, and I’ll never forget the feeling of being surrounded by so much encouragement. What makes it even more special is that I still talk to and meet up with my teammates from that year. That sense of family and connection is what I’ll definitely miss the most in cross country. Your teammates see you at your absolute worst (hot, sweaty, and sometimes in tears), but they’re always there to support you.

7) What advice do you have for the younger runners on the team or someone who wishes to go out for XC?
** Focus on being consistent, having a good attitude, and supporting your teammates. Most people wouldn’t even fathom running 3.1 miles (and a lot more in practice), so just showing up and giving it your best is a success in and of itself. You don’t have to win races to make a lasting impact.

8)What are your post-graduation running plans? Will you run in college? Will you attempt a marathon one day? Will you never run again? Etc.
** After graduation, I plan on running casually, mainly to maintain good physical health. While I don’t plan to run competitively in college, I hope to stay active by participating in a few half marathons a couple of times a year. Running has been a big part of my life, and I want to keep it as an enjoyable habit without the pressure of competition.

9) What legacy would you like to leave behind as you look back on your experience?
** Although it's a bit cheesy, running as a type one diabetic has definitely presented some unique challenges over the past few years. I’m honestly proud of myself for never giving up, even when things got tough, and I hope that other students who face their own obstacles feel motivated to at least try to get out there and run. If I can leave behind a legacy, it’s that perseverance and attitude matter more than just talent.

10) Is there anyone you would like to thank?
** I’d like to thank Mr. Ellis and Mrs. Zinnell for being such incredible supporters throughout my time on the team. Cross country has been one of the biggest parts of my life for the past six years, and I’m beyond grateful for the support my coaches have given me through all of my awkward phases. Cross country is 100% a mental sport, and without coaches who genuinely care and believe in you, it would be so much harder to keep pushing.

11) Anything else you would like your fans and community to know?
** No.

1) What has been the highlight of your senior season?
** Being able to have the perfect balance of competition and fun while running with my friends.

2) What is your favorite course that you've ran (excluding State) over your XC career? Any reason why?
** St. Paul at Miletta Vista because it was not only challenging hills but also challenging trying to dodge holes and cow pies. It was also the prettiest course.

3) What was your least favorite practice, knowing that when you came that day, it was going to be a long day?
**A track workout.

4) What makes running for Ravenna XC fun and unique that you might not find in another XC program?
** The fun side of this program is unbeatable. We can have fun, laugh, and joke while we are on the bus to meets or taking a break at practice. Then becoming serious for our run is something you don’t find too often.

5) What do you believe has helped make you so successful as a XC runner and what has this program taught you in terms of life?
** I believe that Mr. Ellis, Mrs. Zinnell, and Erica have helped me the most. As a result of me actually listening to them my pacing has become better and better. I believe this sport has helped my mentality while in hardships to become better than it was.

6) What is your best memory from being a member of the XC team and what will you miss most about being a part of this team?
** My best memory is team bonding my junior year. I will miss the team aspect of it. Being able to talk while we run and becoming a family over the years I’ve been a part of the program.

7) What advice do you have for the younger runners on the team or someone who wishes to go out for XC?
** Don’t complain or Mr. Ellis will make the workout harder. He makes the rules.

8)What are your post-graduation running plans? Will you run in college? Will you attempt a marathon one day? Will you never run again? Etc.
** I will try to run as much as I can but we will see what happens. I’ll probably attempt a half marathon at some point.

9) What legacy would you like to leave behind as you look back on your experience?
** I would like to leave the legacy of being a good teammate while also being a passionate and competitive runner.

10) Is there anyone you would like to thank?
** I would like to thank all the parents and grandparents that come support us at meets (especially Grandpa Pat). I would like to thank the coaches for all the work they put in for us to become better. I would also like to thank all those who encouraged me to join cross country.

11) Anything else you would like your fans and community to know?
** I hated cross country and running before I joined. I would say “you won’t catch me dead out there.” But after I joined, it truly changed my life. I have had some of the best experiences in cross country.

✅ JH STATE MEET!! ✅

Junior high athletes don’t always get the spotlight, but they are the foundation of every great high school team. At Ravenna Cross Country, we don’t see ourselves as two separate programs, junior high and high school, we are one team. We practice together, race together, and cheer each other on every step of the way. And this year, something truly special happened for our junior high squad.

For the first time in Ravenna history, we had two runners compete in the Junior High State Cross Country Championship Meet in Papillion this weekend!

Abbie Osten and Remi Behrendt turned heads all season long, placing in the Top 5 at every single meet and each bringing home an individual title during the season. Their consistency, grit, and determination were unmatched.

But while Abbie and Remi earned plenty of well-deserved spotlight, the rest of our girls’ team deserves just as much recognition. Eloise Rager, Katie Bursaw, and Morgan Schuller medaled throughout the season, and their strong finishes helped Ravenna place as a team week after week for the first time in over five years! Thanks to their shared commitment, the JH girls were Invite Champions or Runner-Up at every single meet this season. Cross country may look like an individual sport, but these girls understood that it’s teamwork that builds champions.

This weekend was our first-ever appearance at the Junior High State Meet. Nearly 180 runners from 55 schools took to the line in the combined Class C/D race, making the field tougher than ever. The atmosphere was electric, think UNK Invite level energy, with over 1,500 of Nebraska’s best junior high runners on site.

The 3K (1.86 mile) course was the longest race our girls had faced all season, but that didn’t slow them down one bit. Abbie and Remi attacked the course with confidence. Their efforts made Ravenna history once again, bringing home our first-ever Junior High State Medal!

🏁 RESULTS 🏁 (178 runners / 55 schools)
Remi Behrendt - 12:34 - 24th *medalist*
Abbie Osten - 12:56 - 35th

**If the race had been divided by class size, these girls would have absolutely shined in a Class D-only field, Abbie would have finished 15th and Remi 9th! That means in a hypothetical meet, both runners are already performing at a level that could make them potential State medalists in their first year in high school as freshmen in Class D! The future is looking very bright for Ravenna Cross Country.

Congratulations to Abbie, Remi, Elo, Katie, and Morgan on an absolutely stellar season! We are so proud of you all!

✅ CONFERENCE INVITE ✅

The LouPlatte Conference may be small, but it’s mighty. Back at Gibbon for the second time this season, we came in feeling confident after a strong showing here in early September. The weather couldn’t have been better for fast racing.

On the girls’ side, we knew Central City was likely to claim the Conference Championship with a perfect score, and they did. However, the battle for Conference Runner-Up, 3rd, and 4th place was wide open between us, St. Paul, and Gibbon. Our girls rose to the challenge and delivered one of their best efforts of the season. Maleah ran one of her strongest races yet, overtaking two Gibbon runners and a St. Paul competitor she’s had her eye on all season to finish 8th. Aubree earned her second medal of the season, edging out several of her seasonal rivals to secure 12th place. As a team, the girls finished 4th overall. We fell just short of the points needed for Runner-Up and Third by 8 and 6 points respectively, but this was unquestionably the strongest the girls have looked all season.

For the boys, we faced the likely Class D State Champion from Doniphan Trumbull leading the pack, along with one or two other probable State medalists. None of our boys medaled this time, but just like the girls, they turned in some of their best performances of the season. Wyton and Brendan led the way, finishing just outside the medal standings. Every single boy on the team ran negative splits at each mile and Quentin secured another PR for the season, something I’ve been stressing to them all season, and they finally nailed it.

✅ ORD INVITE ✅

An unusually warm day in Ord meant fewer PRs but certainly no shortage of medals! In fact, it turned out to be our best meet of the season in terms of medal count!

On the girls’ side, Maleah was NOT the lone medalist this time. Aubree earned her very first medal in her first season, and Kloee rounded out the group of medalists by snagging 20th place after missing a medal at Ord last year by just one spot. As the “nerds” like to say, these girls are so nice… yet cold-blooded killers on the course. They even coined the phrase “PR or ER,” so we knew they were going to bring the effort.

On the boys’ side, we finally claimed our first medalist of the season. Brendan came in hot and captured 14th place. He decided to transfer the lightning from his hairdo on Tuesday to his feet on Friday. Smart move, Brendan.

For the junior high crew, this was their final meet of the season, and as most high school runners would admit, we’ll miss their unique brand of weirdness just a little bit. The boys gave it everything they had, finishing the season with some of their strongest efforts yet. The girls, meanwhile, didn’t let up on their season-long success, finishing as team runner-up and keeping their streak alive by placing either 1st or 2nd at every meet this year.

Remi moved so fast that the lead cart struggled to keep up, taking the meet championship with Abbie close behind in 4th. The rest of the girls’ team just barely missed the medal cut, but Remi and Abbie capped off their season by medaling at every single meet, a first for Ravenna, at least in the past 15 years!

✅ FRANKLIN INVITE ✅

The meet was in question right up until the start thanks to some heavy rain in the area. Thankfully, the skies cleared just enough to make it a pleasant day to run.

The girl's motto quickly became “Cook or Be Cooked.” Whether that referred to the competition or the chance of being fried by lightning… we're not really sure. On the girls’ side, Maleah once again brought home a medal, finishing in 12th. Thirteen has been her lucky number all season, but she decided it was time to level up.

On the boys’ side, Quentin and Aaron each PR’d by about 40 seconds, a massive personal growth, while the rest of the crew seemed more focused on questionable wet soppy hairdos. While the girls worried about getting cooked by lightning, the boys looked like they were auditioning for Grease with their “greased lightning” hairstyles.

The Junior High showed up big once again in their penultimate meet of the season. Remi blazed a 5:59 mile with Abbie right behind at 6:11, claiming 2nd and 3rd place while leaving even most of the boys in the dust. Elo and Katie added some hardware with their first medals of the season, both cracking the Top 10, and Morgan helped seal the deal for another team victory. The Junior High might have taken the lightning warnings the most seriously, because they clearly put it in their feet!

✅ RAVENNA INVITE ✅

The granddaddy of them all… or at least that’s how we like to think of it. With 24 teams and nearly 400 runners registered between the high school and junior high divisions (our largest meet ever and one of the larger meets in the whole state!), it was a fantastic meet and perfect weather despite the uncertainty and messy painting leading up to the day! Maleah Rager was once again our lone high school medalist, while Quentin Hall turned in an outstanding PR. On the junior high side, Abbie and Remi continued to show the next generation what speed looks like, both earning spots in the Top 5. With teams traveling from as far west as Mullen and as far east as Exeter-Milligan, it’s clear everyone wants to run at Ravenna, or at least their coaches want them to. Since we were busy running the meet, we’d love for those of you who came out to cheer on the Bluejays to share your photos below!

The hills were brutal, but at least the weather was cool this year. Perhaps more importantly, as one student pointed out, “It feels like a long three miles, but at least we’re not on the Oregon Trail. If I had to run this course a second time or risk getting dysentery…I guess I’d run.”

Maleah found her rhythm again. Another PR. Another medal. 13th place. Two weeks in a row. Who even PRs at Gibbon? She does. So did Lilly and Aubree! The entire girls team really gave a fantastic effort despite the course intensity and really great competition.

The boys came in ready to work. The field was stacked...about 25 runners larger than last year and fast too. No PRs and no medals. BUT plenty of grit. They walked away with one thing on their minds; five short weeks until the Conference Meet, right back here at Gibbon. And they won't be walking away medal free next time.

Then in the junior high race, the girls decided as the night got colder, it was time to light a fire and they brought the heat with their feet.

Abbie Osten torched the course, clocking a 6:55 to grab the individual 1st place! Our first junior high champ since 2019. Right behind her, Remi Behrendt battled to the line, literally just one second from second place, and locked up 3rd. Add in Katie, Eloise, and Morgan, and suddenly we found ourselves at the top. Junior high girls team champions for the first time at any meet since 2018.

✅ SAINT PAUL INVITE ✅

Thursday kicked off our season at the Saint Paul Invite and with an unexpected twist! St. Paul decided last minute to move their invite from Miletta Vista Winery to their country club. No one shed a tear about skipping the chance to plow through cow pies or dodge barbed wire fence on what might be Nebraska’s most rugged course. Instead, the action shifted to their country club, quite possibly the flattest golf course on Earth.

Our team got the year started on solid footing, even with several first-time runners and a bit of early season illness hanging around. We came home with a few medals but the junior high crew stole the spotlight early, proving that while medals are nice, the true prize after a race might just be a perfectly crisp post race apple.

In typical Coach Ellis fashion, medal winner photos were forgotten, so please enjoy this awesome team photo of our varsity courtesy of our unofficial official team photographer, Cindi Coulter!
