⚠️ Toxic Weeds Every Horse Owner Should Know
Many toxic weeds become more dangerous when dried in hay because horses can't easily identify and avoid them. Knowing what grows in your pastures can help prevent serious illness or even death.
Weeds to Watch For:
🌿 **Poison Hemlock** – Extremely toxic; can cause respiratory failure and death.
🌿 **Tansy Ragwort** – Causes irreversible liver damage over time.
🌿 **White Snakeroot** – Contains toxins that can affect the nervous system and muscles.
🌿 **Jimsonweed** – Can cause colic, dilated pupils, confusion, and rapid heartbeat.
🌿 **Buttercup** – Usually avoided when fresh, but can cause mouth irritation and digestive upset.
🌿 **Bracken Fern** – Long-term consumption can lead to vitamin deficiencies and neurological problems.
How often do you walk your pastures and check for toxic weeds? Have you found any of these on your property?
