Special Olympics South Dakota Fall Classic - Volunteers Needed

September 18-20 in Rapid City, with bocce at Memorial Park and softball at Star of the West. We need help running bocce shifts, softball scorekeeping and scoreboard operating, base umpires, skills event volunteers, and food service. Most shifts run 3.5 to 4 hours.

Weekly High School Program Spotlight - St. Thomas More / Rapid City Christian Boys Soccer

Coach Tomas Metzler

A bit about you as a coach:
Coached at Ignite Soccer Club since 2021. Started coaching at STM in 2025.

Athletes to watch this season:
Luca Scherr. Brayden Stalley. Jer Williams. Mason McIntosh. Kellan Knapp.

What's different from last year's team:
We're now co-oping with Rapid City Christian. We're a younger and smaller team but with a much more technical understanding of the game.

Team outlook for the upcoming season:
Very competitive in SDHSAA Class A.

Who do you see as the top team headed into the season:
James Valley Christian

What is your coaching emphasis this year:
Smart decision making on and off the ball.

Last season's record or finish:
3-9-1

Any seniors moving on to play at the next level:

Congratulations to the Nerdy Nuts August Athletes of the Month!

Izzy Renaud won a state championship for the Rapid City Swim team in the 13-14 Girls 50 Breaststroke and was part of several 2nd place relay teams during the state tournament.

Weekly High School Program Spotlight - Central High School Girls Tennis

Coach Lance Cole

A bit about you as a coach:
I started as a volunteer assistant two years ago and have been Head Coach for the last two years. I am retired from a career with the US Department of Justice and am currently working as a Paraprofessional in SPED at Central.

Athletes to watch this season: Kili Cole, Junior (Flight 1). Lilly Deming, Sophomore (Flight 2). Mya Rivers, Sophomore (Flight 3). Sutton Bennett, 8th grade at East Middle School (Flight 5).

What's different from last year's team: We are basically the same team except for Sutton, who transferred in from Houston, Texas. The girls worked hard over the winter and summer, and so are better prepared than ever for the season.

Team outlook for the upcoming season: The last time the team won a match was in the Fall 2022 season. So, our goal this year was to finally break through and win some matches. So far we are 2-2, with wins over Spearfish and Madison. We still have a long way to go but are making progress.

Who do you see as the top team headed into the season: RC Stevens

What is your coaching emphasis this year: I always focus on fundamentals. We really try to use tennis as a platform for success in life, building the girls' self-confidence and mental and physical toughness and resiliency. We also want them to enjoy tennis so that it is something they can do for a lifetime and maybe teach others.

Last season's record or finish: 0-18

Any seniors moving on to play at the next level: We have three seniors, but I don't think any of them plan to play tennis in college.
