Fort Meade is located just east of Sturgis, South Dakota off Highway 34. It was formally known as Camp Sturgis and was active from 1878 to 1944. It is currently home to a Veterans Hospital, SD National guards, and Fort Meade National Cemetery. Originally the fort was established to protect illegal white settlements in the Black Hills, including the gold mining area around Deadwood. Fort Meade was designated a National Historic District on May 22, 1973 and today functions as a public museum. There is a recreational area on site, and part of the Centennial Trail runs through it. The Old Baldy Trail is located near Spearfish, South Dakota. It is a loop trail that is 5.7 miles in length with a 0.8 mile spur trail that will lead you to the summit for a total trip of around 8 miles. The trail is moderate, has an elevation change of 300 feet, and especially pretty to do in the fall. Gold Mountain Mine Interpretive Site is a really cool place to visit that is just northwest of the town of Hill City, South Dakota. It was built in the 1920s, and closed in 1941. In 2009 and in the later years volunteers began preservation of the site. In 2013 an interpretive trail was built around the mill with informative signs explaining its history. The site contains a standing mill frame, a mine shaft, and some other interesting remains. Legion Lake Trail is an easy scenic trail that is about 1 mile long and circles Legion Lake in Custer State Park, South Dakota. The trail starts at the lake and is an easy hike for the whole family. Along the way the kids can play in the playground and even swim at the beach if in need of a break. It is a good place to birdwatch and there are a lot of pretty flowers along the trail. The Sylvan Lake Shore Trail is a 1 mile hike that goes around Sylvan Lake in Custer State Park, South Dakota. Walking west, both sides of the lake are handicapped accessible, but the back side by the dam is not. There are a lot of stairs, and some rocks to climb so keep that in mind if wanting to do the whole trail. When in the area take some time and climb the boulders to get a great view of the lake. This is the 9th section of the Mickelson Trail - Dumont Trailhead to Englewood Trailhead - milepost 92.6 to milepost 98.5. We rode this trail from the Dumont Trailhead down to the Englewood Trailhead and it was mostly downhill. The first part goes uphill for around a mile. There are a couple of gates you have to go through and a beautiful section of trees that would be gorgeous in the fall. Overall it is a pretty easy section of the trail. The whole trail is 109 miles long and is an abandoned railroad branch line constructed by the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad in 1890-91 and last operated by the Burlington Northern Railroad in 1983. The route was converted into a hiking and biking trail through the Rails-To-Trails program and was given its name in honor of former SD governor George Mickelson who spearheaded the project but tragically died in a plane crash in 1993. The Chapel In The Hills is an exact replica of the Borgund Stavkirke Church built around 1150 in Norway. The church is located just west of Canyon Lake off of Chapel Lane in Rapid City, South Dakota on 30 acres of well landscaped lawns. There is also a little prayer trail that leads up the hill behind the church, a museum, and a store. Visiting the church is free and the church is used for weddings and photo ops. During the summer the church is usually open to get a viewing inside. The church also has a summer worship service from 730 to 800 pm on Wednesday, Saturdays, and Sundays. Willow Creek Trail is a 2.8 mile loop trail that follows a stream, leads to a small waterfall, and takes you through a pine forest with some unique rock formations. It is located just west of Mount Rushmore, South Dakota on Highway 244. It is a pretty easy hike and also a starting point for hiking up to Black Elk Peak if you choose.
