Maybe this is part of the reason partridge numbers seem so low this year! The older I get, the more disappointed I am in people choosing $$ over our Earth. Right here in Maine folks. It’s a doggone travesty

I’ve read over the proposal and have some thoughts. I’m glad is publicizing this document and giving us an opportunity to speak up. It seems like many topics are stuff the dept has been doing for years, and focusing a lot on stocking. Some plans about not stocking over wild fish are positives. I did not see any language about habitat improvement, which is disappointing. Reshaping some of our rivers could restore better cold water, and warm water, fisheries. It’s clear that a majority of funds are still being allocated to stocking, which seems like the opposite direction. Thoughts?

Biologist friends…. Is there a reason why our larger rivers couldn’t have this done to them to create more shade, bug life, and erosion control? The Andro & Kennebec are lacking large trees on the river banks. Stuff like this is what I’m talking about when I’d like to see license fees allocated to habitat management versus continuous stocking of fish that will not be able to reproduce and thrive?

My new response when people balk at the price of a guided trip. What’s even better is when they tell me they can’t make that date because they’re going to a Pats game 😂😂

Never a bad start to the day! showing off his talents from a trip this spring. Cam is doing some camera work for my website and I can’t even tell you how impressed I’ve been by his work ethic, talent and attention to detail. Also special thanks to for being my client for the morning. Had some fun with the brookies on top this past spring!

Many big name rivers out west have closed at times this season due to drought conditions. Soon this river will be chock full of fish from the lake. does not have the integrity to close fisheries, so sadly, we have to make these moral judgments on our own. Yes we all know you can catch big fish that you’ll post pictures of randomly on a snowy January night, but the truth is many folks will foul hook these fish in very low, warm water. Playing a foul hooked fish is exhausting for the fish and if it’s returning to the algae filled, low oxygenated water after a long fight, it will perish. Be smart, be considerate, make good choices. Is your fishing experience worth the life of a fish that isn’t lawfully allowed to be killed?

Found some water in the mid 50s and fished for trout for the first time in a month! All it took was hotspot caddis, which was my idea FYI, to get the grand slam. No brookies or browns pictured so you’ll have to take my word for it! The best in the biz continues to get the job done time and again!!

Read this great article by the great Kirk Deeter from TU all about “numbers”. A lot of folks, myself included, evaluate their day based on numbers of fish caught. With the increasing ease of nymphing, this is becoming an issue not talked about enough. We need to know when enough is enough. As a guide, I have to admit it was refreshing to read this blurb because I put more value into teaching different techniques over catching loads of trout. Many of my nymph loving clients get their fair share of dry fly fishing when they go out with me. I find it more valuable to help folks put more tools in their toolbox than to just hammer on nymphs all day. While nymphing can be more technical than most people think, fooling a fish to take your dry is always a fun challenge with high visual reward!

Wader repair 101. Turn ‘em inside out. Fill the legs with water. You’ll see the leak pretty quickly. Let ‘em dry and aquaseal them. See my Orvis vs Simms mini review as well!

On to smallie season…. After fighting and watching folks fight brookies and salmon all spring, it’s still clear that smallmouth are pound for pound some of the hardest fighting fish out there. Get out and explore some smallie water or hire a guide to show you how we do smallmouth here in Maine!
