Energy low during your workout?

The fatigue-fighter: Magnesium

If your 30-minute workout leaves you feeling like you just climbed Mt. Everest, you might be low on magnesium. When researchers at the U.S. Agricultural Research Service restricted intake of the mineral among 13 women ages 47 to 75 for 4 months, they found that those with magnesium deficiencies required more oxygen uptake during physical activity, used more energy, and therefore tired more easily. Snack on 1/4 cup of pumpkin seeds and you’ll take care of about half of your recommended daily allowance, 310 mg for women (320 mg for ages 31+) and 400 mg for men (420 mg for ages 31+).

Healthier TV snacks

Roasted Chickpeas (1 cup)

Satisfy your craving for a crunchy treat with roasted chickpeas. One cup of these little guys packs half your recommended daily amount of fiber, plus a staggering 12 g of protein, at only 200 calories. Just toss a can of drained, dry chickpeas with a little olive oil and roast them like you would any vegetable—at about 400ºF for 30 to 40 minutes—on a baking sheet. Once they’re out of the oven, Moore recommends sprinkling on some Indian or hot pepper spices to add flavor and another element of appetite control: “We tend to eat less of foods that are hot and spicy,” she says.

Add Flaxseed Oil to Smoothies

When buying tuna in spring water, be sure to
always check the label. Fat content—even from
the same company and same brand—can vary
quite substantially.
The reason? Tuna caught closer to the shore are
leaner (less fattier foods in their
diets) than tuna caught farther
out to sea (more abundant
sea life and higher fat diets).
