Nearly 40 years. What an incredible legacy.
As Walter and Marlene say goodbye to their chapter at Freeport Bakery, we want to share one small piece of the enormous impact they have had on this community.
Years ago, Technique reached out to Freeport Bakery to ask if they might be willing to partner with us on a holiday pie fundraiser to support our athletes. Marlene told us that in all their years of owning the bakery, no one had ever asked them to do a fundraiser before.
And she said yes. 💜
That yes turned into a wonderful Technique tradition.
Every Thanksgiving and Christmas, our families looked forward to the Freeport Bakery pie fundraiser. It was never our biggest fundraiser, but without question, it was one of our most loved. In fact, families whose children had long since left Technique would still call us every year to ask, “Are you doing the Freeport pies?” and put in their orders.
But what we will remember most is the kindness behind it.
These fundraisers took place during some of the busiest days of the year for a bakery, yet Walter would load up our pies and personally bring them to Technique so our families wouldn’t have to drive across town. Sometimes one trip wasn’t enough, so he would go back and make another. And somehow, he would still show up with samples for us as a thank you for our business.
Walter and Marlene, thank you for saying yes to us all those years ago. Thank you for helping our athletes. Thank you for making things easier for our families. Thank you for every pie, every delivery, every extra trip, every sample and every act of kindness along the way.
Freeport Bakery has been part of so many Sacramento traditions and celebrations for nearly 40 years. We feel incredibly fortunate that, for a little while, you became part of one of ours too.
Enjoy every minute of your well earned retirement.
And Walter and Marlene, should you ever find yourselves wondering what to do with a free weekend now that you actually have one, there will always be two seats waiting for you at a Technique Gymnastics meet. 💜
