⭐️ Airman Spotlight! ⭐️
Staff Sgt. Alex Haagenson
3E7X1 - Fire Protection Specialist
132d Civil Engineer Squadron
For Staff Sgt. Alex Haagenson, balancing college and military service is just part of the job.
Originally from South Dakota, Haagenson transferred to the Iowa Air National Guard while attending Iowa State University. He’s now finishing a degree in agronomy while preparing for an upcoming deployment as a firefighter with the 132d Wing’s Fire Emergency Services.
The combination of military service and firefighting was a natural fit.
“My dad was a firefighter, and my siblings joined the military, so I figured it was kind of a perfect collaboration of the two. It's always been exciting to me,” he said.
Though he may return to agriculture down the road, firefighting has always been close to his heart. During annual training held at the North Dakota Air National Guard’s 119th Wing, he took part in vehicle extractions, multi-story building fire drills, and aircraft fire suppression scenarios.
Experiences like those reinforce his drive to pursue firefighting full-time.
“There’s a great family culture around the station… I just love the excitement of the job,” he said. “It really keeps me on my feet, moving around.”
On why he volunteered for the upcoming deployment:
“When I was with my old unit, they were about to deploy about a year out, and that's when I was transferring over to Des Moines… so it was kind of poor timing because I really wanted a deploy, but when the opportunity arose and a couple of spots opened up, I volunteered immediately.”
Not only will Haagenson be part of a small group of 132d Wing Airmen deploying, he’ll also be taking a full semester of online college courses to stay on track with his education.
“I'm excited to get out there and make a difference.”
