Bringing Philip Rivers back to Carter-Finley Stadium sounds like a fairytale story. But is it actually a terrible idea for NC State football? Yahoo Sports and Phantom Island host Steven Godfrey joined the show and didn't hold back, saying a Philip Rivers hire has "bad idea" written all over it. As Godfrey points out, handing the keys to a high school coach without college experience is something a struggling program like Rutgers or Boston College would do just to sell tickets.

NC State isn't a total rebuild — it’s a program with "good bones," strong facilities, and a roster foundation ready to win. Settling for nostalgia instead of hiring a proven, high-level college program builder could set the Wolfpack back years.

Exhibition basketball doesn't count on the official record, but it definitely leaves a paper trail. Preseason games are fact-finding missions meant to show coaches what works and what needs immediate surgery. But coming off a 76-58 loss to Indiana, North Carolina’s 89-82 overtime scare against Charlotte made those defensive flaws impossible to ignore. There are some roster limitations that first-year head coach Michael Malone has to navigate. Can Malone scheme around these issues, or will this plague Chapel Hill all winter?

Heading into Green Bay, Carolina Panthers fans are riding the emotional roller coaster once again. That stat floating around social media? As NC State launches its coaching search following the firing of Dave Doeren, one name is sucking all the oxygen out of Raleigh: Philip Rivers.

If Rivers is a legitimate target, go make it happen. But if he isn't a candidate or isn't interested, the Wolfpack stakeholders must shut the rumors down definitively. Leaving the door cracked allows the specter of Rivers to hover over the entire search. If the university lets fan expectations spiral, whoever actually takes the job will start at a massive narrative disadvantage.

Fresh off emotional wins over Pitt and Duke, North Carolina had the national spotlight handed to them on a silver platter. All they had to do was handle business at home against Syracuse. Instead, a 31-30 overtime loss at Kenan Stadium completely derailed the momentum. This wasn't just a tough ACC loss — it was a "can't-lose" game that cost the Tar Heels a ranking and a chance to host ESPN’s College GameDay in Chapel Hill.

Don't believe how big of a deal it was? Chris Fowler straight up confirmed on the broadcast that GameDay was lined up for UNC if they won. Blowing this opportunity stings worse than a normal loss.
