Screaming Is Not Control: If you have to scream to manage class, the real problem is probably structure πŸ‘‡
βœ… Strong class structure creates better control
βœ… Consistency helps kids know what to expect
βœ… Organized classes need less correction and less chaos
πŸ’‘ Real class control comes from structure, not volume.

Keep Kids Motivated: Here are 3 simple ways to keep kids motivated in class πŸ‘‡
βœ… Give public praise, a high five, or a quick shoutout
βœ… Let them help as a mat helper when appropriate
βœ… Use small rewards like a specialty stripe or patch
πŸ’‘ Small moments of recognition can make a big impact on motivation.

Parents Need to See Progress
Parents usually do not quit over one bad class; they quit when they do not see progress πŸ‘‡
βœ… Set realistic expectations from the start
βœ… Help parents understand that Jiu-Jitsu progress takes time
βœ… Point out growth in focus, attitude, and effort along the way
πŸ’‘ When parents understand the journey, they are more likely to stay committed.

Good vs Great Classes
Good kids' classes are fine. Great kids' classes are built differently πŸ‘‡
βœ… They have structure
βœ… They are repeatable from class to class
βœ… They keep kids engaged from start to finish
πŸ’‘ Great classes are not random; they are built on structure and consistency.

Build Better Training Partners
Are your students learning how to be good training partners? πŸ‘‡
βœ… A good partner helps their teammate learn and improve
βœ… A good partner helps keep class safe
βœ… A good partner helps make training more fun for everyone
πŸ’‘ In Jiu-Jitsu, your partner is not the enemy; they are part of your team.

Get Kids Thinking: Engage is about getting kids to think, not just copyπŸ‘‡
βœ… Ask questions like, β€œWhat’s the next step?”
βœ… Call on students who raise their hand
βœ… Let them work through the process out loud
πŸ’‘ The more kids think through the lesson, the better they understand and remember it.

Question for gym owners and coaches:

How do you display your monthly curriculum for students and parents? Do you use a curriculum board, digital screens, handouts, an app, or something else?

At PAMA, we display our monthly curriculum on boards located on both training floors so students, parents, and instructors can easily see what we're working on throughout the month. We also have the curriculum available in our student app, making it easy for families to stay informed and follow along with their child's progress.

I'm always interested in seeing how other schools communicate their curriculum and keep everyone engaged. What works best for your academy?

More Than Just Techniques: We asked kids what BJJ means to them, and their answers say a lot πŸ‘‡
βœ… Working hard and doing my best
βœ… Having fun in a happy, safe place
βœ… Learning self-defense and respect
πŸ’‘ We are not just teaching techniques, we are helping shape the whole child.

A Game That Actually Builds Skill
Coaches, this is not just another game that wastes mat time πŸ‘‡
βœ… It helps train timing
βœ… It sharpens speed and precision
βœ… It brings out healthy competitiveness
πŸ’‘ The right game does more than entertain; it builds real skills.

Stop the Derailment- Disruption can derail a class fast, unless you address it early πŸ‘‡
βœ… Use proximity by moving closer to the child
βœ… Give a positive redirect to get them back on track
βœ… Talk with the parent if extra support is needed
πŸ’‘ Small behavior issues are easier to fix when you address them early and calmly.
