Got to officially meet one of my close friends in the sport David Stephenson of Kastle Pigeon today and it was great. It’s been a long time coming as we estimated about a decade since we started talking.

Excited to give this new c**k bird a chance in the breeding loft, straight from my friends Ken and Jayne E Credeur of CFL Pigeons. Before I ever put hands on him, he caught my attention with his race performance in the Dairyland Derby OLR—showing up in an extremely tough race and backing it up again in a fast final. That kind of consistency matters.

I was honestly impressed with the overall quality of birds my friends donated to my club’s Southwest Washington Racers Winter Show & Auction fundraiser this year. My goal is to select at least one bird from the auction every year, and this year it was especially hard to narrow it down. It’s a great opportunity to try new blood from people I respect, and at the same time support a cause that helps keep our club strong. Looking forward to seeing what this one can do in the breeding loft.

Been dialing in a simple but effective way to supplement my open loft system.

I’ve started using bucket feeders designed for quail, filled with barley 24/7. The design forces the birds to reach in and pull the grain out, which dramatically cuts down on spillage and waste. One of the biggest keys is sticking to a single grain—if you mix grains, they quickly learn to sort through it, eat what they want, and waste the rest.

During the off-season, these same buckets will be used for my breeders to help maintain condition without overdoing it. They also make care much easier when I’m gone and my son or others are helping look after the birds—consistent, clean, and simple.

Looking ahead to the breeding season, the plan is to run pellets in these buckets, while supplementing with grain in a trough feeder. For training and racing, the buckets stay in play so the birds always trap to barley, then receive grain once most are home—or in the evening on non-training days after open loft or loft exercise.

Nothing fancy—just practical systems that save feed, save time, and keep the birds right. I hope this helps someone to make this hobby easier and more enjoyable.

About 6 years ago I made a decision to invest in every grizzle I could get my hands on that had a performance background and then begin testing them on my course, under my system, and in OLR competition.

What you’re seeing in this video are 6 of my own bred grizzles, now 2nd and 3rd generations deep. Over time the numbers were whittled down, not by pedigree on paper, but by consistency in what they actually produced.

If you stay true to results and let performance do the talking, even a color some people doubt will prove it can fly. This is what remains after years of testing, culling, and honest evaluation. On my open loft, with intense predator pressure, a bird that stands out in color has to be even more special to survive.

Yesterday was a really cool day for more ways than one. I donated a bird to the Texas Center of Racing Pigeon Clubs Winter Meet fundraiser auction. Putting a bird in the box of that quality was incredibly hard but I knew I had to send something awesome to help my friends. It felt good that the quality was recognized but most of all it felt great that he went to benefit a solid group of pigeon racers to keep the local sport alive.

Had a great day with my club Southwest Washington Racers and all those who came out to support us. Incredibly honored to have so much interest in my bird and the proceeds went to a great cause. Thank you to my great friend Ryan Jones who’s been a huge supporter of our club and an amazing auctioneer.

Recently I was asked to come on the All About Pigeons podcast with Philip Fry to discuss an article I wrote for the Racing Pigeon Digest approximately a year ago on an important topic in our sport, hand scanning. We had a great discussion on that and other things. Check it out at the link below. Hope everyone has a happy new year!

Closing out the year with an eye on the future.

This beautiful young hen is the final baby I raised off the great EZ Money, paired back to his sister—a daughter of Konbird. She carries everything I admired in her father: phenomenal structure, calm demeanor, and presence. Her eye is something special too, full of movement and vibration, the kind that makes you stop and look twice.

This blood isn’t new or trendy—it’s proven and has stood the test of time. Many of my own wins can be credited to it, and even recently the results continue to speak. Ken Easley had the best U.S.-bred bird in the final race of the AfrikaPro, bred off a daughter of EZ Money, and that same hen also produced a money winner at the USA Pigeon Derby. That kind of consistency is hard to ignore.

As we ring in the new year, she’s a reminder of legacy, patience, and what’s ahead. And speaking of the future—on January 3rd, the Southwest Washington Racers will be hosting an auction where her half-brother will be available. Show up in person or phone bid, but don’t miss the opportunity to potentially become one of the last owners of a son of EZ Money.

Some chapters are closing… but the next ones are just getting started.

I wanted to feature this c**k today because the weather finally cooperated—clear skies, good light, and a chance to slow down and appreciate a bird that’s meant a lot to me.

In just two years of breeding, his offspring have earned over $10,000 in OLR prize money across different parts of the country. One daughter was a money winner at the Apple Cup OLR, another daughter won $2,000 at the Texas Center of Racing Pigeon Clubs Winter Meet, then stayed on to race with Ken and Jayne E Credeur of CFL Pigeons, finishing the season with a strong performance including 2nd in the Texas Open on a tough hot headwind race. The nest-mate to that hen went on to be a local champion racing c**k that flew to the front on the hardest race of the year, and another hen that went on to win the $10,000 Louisiana Perch One Loft Race final race for Linc's Loft.

Beyond the results, he’s built the way I like them—great structure, vitality, feather quality, and that vibration you feel the moment you pick him up.

The results matter, but days like this are also about appreciating the bird itself.
