What would you do if someone grabbed you from behind?

Most people have never thought about it beyond what they've seen in a movie.

That's exactly why we train.

At Scorpion Rising, self-defense isn't about turning you into a fighter. It's about giving you practical skills you can actually use when things don't go according to plan.

Don't train because you're afraid. Train because you're worth protecting.

👩‍👧 MOMS, NANNIES, BABYSITTERS &CAREGIVERS — HAVE YOU TRAINED FOR THIS?

When you're caring for a child, your hands aren't always free.

You may be carrying them. Holding their hand. Carrying a diaper bag. Loading them into a car. Or simply trying to keep an eye on them while dealing with an unexpected situation.

So what happens if someone becomes a threat to you?

You can't always put the child down and deal with the situation. And you certainly don't want to put the child in danger while trying to protect yourself.

That's why Scorpion Rising has developed specific self-defense techniques and strategies for caregivers—including ways to defend yourself when your hands are full AND ways to help keep the child safe.

This isn't about living in fear. It's about being prepared, confident, and capable when someone is depending on you.

If you're a mom, nanny, babysitter, daycare provider, grandparent, or caregiver, let's train for the situations that are unique to you.

🦂 Don't train because you're afraid. Train because you're worth protecting.

Violence seems to be happening more and more every day.

People are overwhelmed, frustrated, stressed, and angry. And the fact is, someone can boil over at any time.

But what if more people were trained to handle those moments?

Self-defense isn't about creating more people who know how to fight. It's about creating more people who know how to stay in control.

Learning self-defense can build confidence, options, awareness, and the ability to respond without immediately reacting with anger or fear. The more people who develop those skills, the more people we have who can de-escalate instead of escalate, stay composed instead of losing control, and make better choices when emotions run high.

Self-defense isn't just about protecting yourself from someone else's violence.

It's also about becoming someone who doesn't contribute to it.

Don't train because you're afraid. Train because you're worth protecting.

The world has been scary lately.

I’m not going to sugarcoat it. Assaults, robberies, and other violent crimes happen, and the people who may be targeted aren’t always who we expect.

Law enforcement does an important job, and they do the best they can. But even under the best circumstances, they can’t be everywhere at once. When something happens, help may be minutes away.

And in those minutes, you may be on your own.

That doesn't mean you should live in fear. It means you should be prepared.

Self-defense isn't about being a fighter. It's about having the awareness, mindset, and practical skills to give yourself options when you need them most.

You can't control everything that happens around you.

But you can take steps to be better prepared for it.

Don't train because you're afraid. Train because you're worth protecting.

🥋 “That wouldn’t work in real life.”

If you spend any time watching self-defense videos or martial arts reels, you've probably seen this comment.

Someone demonstrates a technique, and the critics immediately respond:

“That wouldn't work in real life.”

Sometimes they're right. There are techniques out there that I wouldn't recommend either.

But here's something to consider: if you know the technique is coming, you can often react to it before it has a chance to work.

If your training partner knows exactly what you're about to do, they can anticipate it, resist it, or move differently. Then someone says, “See? It doesn't work.”

That's not necessarily testing the technique. It's testing the technique against someone who already knows what's coming.

And here's another point:

Just because you can't make a technique work doesn't mean it doesn't work.

Different people have different bodies, timing, experience, strengths, and weaknesses. What works for one person may not work for another.

That's why self-defense isn't about collecting “magic techniques.” It's about understanding principles, developing skills, and learning to adapt when things don't go according to plan.

So before you say, “That wouldn't work in real life,” ask yourself:

Have you actually trained it? Have you trained it under realistic conditions? And do you understand what you're actually seeing?

Because sometimes the problem isn't the technique.

Sometimes it's the training.

🥋 Train. 🧠 Understand. 💪 Adapt.

🥋 Why Study Martial Arts From Another Time?

Why study martial arts whose techniques were created in a world very different from the one we live in today?

There are several good reasons.

First, while many martial arts are built on techniques developed generations ago, they have not simply been left sitting in the past. Martial arts have continued to adapt, evolve, and develop as the world around them has changed. The principles may be old, but how we understand and apply them can continue to grow.

Second, martial arts have never been solely about fighting.

Unlike many sports, martial arts traditionally include goals that go beyond physical performance. Discipline, respect, perseverance, confidence, and character development are all part of the practice.

That's why martial arts can remain relevant even when the world changes.

We aren't simply learning how to perform techniques. We're learning how to move, think, respond, persevere, and interact with the people around us.

Martial arts aren't just for performance. They're for life. 🥋

The terrain changes.

The techniques may stay fundamentally the same, but the environment can change how they need to be applied. A hard surface, uneven ground, tight space, obstacles, furniture, weather, or simply being somewhere unfamiliar can all affect what works.

That’s why we don’t train in just one perfect environment.

At Scorpion Rising, we practice in different spaces and different situations so that our skills are adaptable—not dependent on everything going exactly as planned.

Because real-world self defense doesn’t happen on a perfectly flat mat.

Train. Adapt. Be prepared. 🦂
