Local baseball: Kiwanis improve to 6-1 with two weekend victories

The Racine Kiwanis are off to a 6-1 start following a pair of victories over the weekend.
The Kiwanis edged the Hartford Hawks 4-3 in a non-league game Saturday at Horlick Field and then defeated the Genoa City Predators 15-4 in a Land O' Lakes League game Sunday in Genoa City.

In Saturday's game, 2021 Union Grove High School graduate Kaden Pfeffer (3-0) continued his pitching mastery. In six innings, he allowed three hits and no earned runs. The left-hander struck out eight, walked one and lowered his earned run average to 0.34.
"His pitching has been fabulous," Kiwanis coach Jack Schiestle said.

The Kiwanis scored one run in the first, two in the second and one in the third. Their best threat was in the second inning, when they started with four straight singles. Joe Prudhom drove in Alex Sadowski and Kyle Sagan drove in Semrad.

Kody Krekling went 2 for 4 with a double, Sagan went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a stolen base and Kyle Semrad went 2 for 4 with an RBI.

In Sunday's game, Charlie Brockman allowed five hits in six innings to improve to 2-0 with a 3.50 earned run average. He struck out eight and walked two. Following one pitching change, Semrad came on to pitch a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
Connor Goodwin went 4 for 5 with a double and an RBI, scored three runs and stole two bases.

"He's faster than lightning," Schiestle said.
Semrad went 2 for 5 with two RBIs and scored two runs. Sadowski went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and scored two runs.
The Kiwanis start play in the Wisconsin Amateur State Baseball Classic Thursday with a 7:30 p.m. game against the Appleton Legends at West Bend High School.
They will continue tournament play Saturday with two games at Kewaskum High School. The Kiwanis play the Kewaskum A's at 10 a.m. and the Clyman Canners at 2:30 p.m.

The Racine Kiwanis are off to a 6-1 start following a pair of victories over the weekend.

Local baseball: Racine Kiwanis lose first game of season

The pitching was there for the Racine Kiwanis Wednesday night.

But for the first time this season, the defense wasn't.
Hindered by a season-high five errors, the Kiwanis lost to the Sussex Cardinals 4-3 in a non-league game at Horlick Field.

Ben Sranske and Noah Johnson both pitched well, Kiwanis coach Jack Schiestle said. Sranske allowed two earned runs in four innings with three strikeouts. Johnson allowed two hits and no earned runs in five innings. He struck out five.
"Our wheels came off," Schiestle said. "I was delighted with both of our pitchers, but five errors is kind of hard to come back from."

The Kiwanis (4-1) scored one run in the first inning when Kyle Sagan scored on a passed ball. In the eighth inning, Alex Hale drove in Kody Krekling and Sagan scored on a fielder's choice.
The Kiwanis host the Hartford Hawks Saturday at noon in another non-league game at Horlick Field. On Sunday, the Kiwanis travel to Genoa City for a noon Land O' Lakes League game.

The pitching was there for the Racine Kiwanis Wednesday night.

Local baseball: Brockman, Wendt lead Kiwanis

Charlie Brockman got back on track Sunday.
Jayden Wendt had a lot to do with that.
After a rough first start of the season, Brockman pitched a five-hitter to lead the Racine Kiwanis to a 6-1 Land O’ Lakes League victory over the East Troy Express in East Troy.

Brockman struck out 10 and did not allow a walk in nine innings.
“Talk about control,” Kiwanis coach Jack Schiestle said.

Behind the plate, Wendt was masterful in his first start of the season.
“Charlie said that he shook him off only three times in the game,” Schiestle said.

Kody Krekling, hitting .500 this season, went 3 for 5 and drove in three runs.
In the first inning, Kyle Semrad walked with the bases loaded, driving in Krekling.
In the fourth inning, Connor Goodwin doubled and Krekling singled. Kyle Sagan followed with what Schiestle said was a “mammoth” home run.

Alex Hale went on to single in Semrad for another run in the fourth inning.
The Kiwanis (4-0, 2-0 LOL) added a run in the ninth inning when Sagan drove in Goodwin with a sacrifice fly.

Charlie Brockman got back on track Sunday.
