Kyung Mu Hapkido Massachusetts Hapkido is a Korean martial art practiced the world over. Characterized by joint locks, throws, and kicking techniques.

Its emphasis on deflecting an opponent’s attacks instead of forceful blocking. The technique is a way to defend against an attacker.

I recently attended a meeting with local Martial Arts instructors to discuss school-related issues, including factors affecting student retention, Black Belt retention, and strategies for maintaining student motivation.

The meeting provided valuable networking opportunities and generated several motivational ideas. I am now seriously considering implementing an Alumni Workout or a similar initiative.

During informal discussions before class, several instructors and masters shared that they had backgrounds in Hapkido and had learned Combat Hapkido through seminars or instructional DVDs.

It is not possible to gain a comprehensive understanding of Hapkido solely through seminars or DVDs, especially if the instructor's own training was limited to these formats. Such an approach does a disservice to both students and instructors. Therefore, I propose establishing a program consisting of closed, three-hour classes held twice a month. This program will focus on teaching the authentic requirements of Hapkido, rather than techniques presented in commercial DVDs. Sessions will be scheduled on Sundays, when most dojangs are closed, and we will rotate locations among members' dojangs to ensure convenience for all participants.

Hapkido can be modified for seniors to focus on gentle, low-impact movements that promote flexibility, balance, and relaxation. Some suitable techniques include:

Soft throws and joint locks (performed gently)
Balance training
Breathing exercises
Gentle stretching
Partner drills for coordination and trust

Many hapkido schools offer classes specifically designed for seniors, emphasizing fall training, flexibility, and self-defense techniques adapted for physical limitations.
