Five and six years old… fighting like one stole the other’s apple juice AND refused to give it back. 😂

Three rounds. Tiny hands flying. Feet fighting for balance. Neither one backing down. Somebody’s applesauce was clearly on the line. 😭😂

But that CONFIDENCE? That competitive spirit? These two kept pushing each other, having fun, and walked out smiling like they hadn’t just put on the main event. 🔥

P.S. Every class, we tell them “NO HITTING TO THE HEAD.” The kids know. The parents know. These two apparently came in Friday with a different agenda. 🤦🏽‍♀️😂 They wanted to scrap, and we let them work. Neither stopped, cried, or complained—they were enjoying the challenge. Watching that confidence come out was something special.

MATCH #1 | SEPTEMBER 27 | MAT MAFIA vs. TAP OUT TIGERS 🔥

The first match of the season, and Joshu Ricardo came ready for WORK.

What was supposed to be a 6-minute match turned into 8 plus minutes of high-intensity competition, disputed calls, heated sidelines, and emotions running high.

But through all the noise, the shouting, the arguments, and the controversy, Ricardo never lost sight of his mission.

No intimidation. No distractions. No excuses.

He stayed composed, trusted his training, and let his performance do the talking. When the pressure increased, so did his determination.

That’s what separates a competitor from a fighter. It’s not just about what you can do when everything goes your way. It’s about how you respond when everything around you becomes chaos.

Ricardo walked away with the victory, helping MAT MAFIA secure its first team win of the season.

And as you saw this past weekend, he did it AGAIN in Match #2.

TWO MATCHES. TWO VICTORIES. 2–0.

The season is just getting started.

NO EXCUSES. NO SHORTCUTS. JUST HEART, DISCIPLINE, AND THE WILL TO WIN. 🔥

From 8 AM to 2 PM, Joshu Ricardo was at our school, TS Howard Beach, teaching our students, and preparing his competition team. Giving his all to everyone.

Then, straight from the school to the competition floor, representing TS of Howard Beach & Mat Mafia against Choke Cartel.

Weighing in at 125 lbs in the 130-lb division, he stepped onto those mats and secured the victory with a GUILLOTINE SUBMISSION!

TWO MATCHES. TWO VICTORIES. 2–0 FOR MAT MAFIA!

But what makes this special isn’t just the win. It’s the example he sets.

Anyone can preach discipline, perseverance, and a never-quit mentality. True leaders LIVE IT, even when they’re tired, even when they’ve already given their all.

We couldn’t be prouder of you, Joshu Ricardo! You continue to lead by example, both as an instructor and a competitor.

Before the day begins, it looks like this.

The mats are clean.
The bags are still.
The benches are empty.
The room is quiet.

But not for long.

Soon, these walls will be filled with laughter, hard work, encouragement, sweat, victories, frustrations, breakthroughs—and people becoming a little stronger than they were when they walked through the door.

It’s hard to believe that almost 20 months have passed since we first opened our doors in Howard Beach.

What started as an empty space has become a place filled with so much life. Kids are growing up on these mats. Adults are discovering what they’re capable of. Confidence is being built. Discipline is being tested. Friendships are being made. People are learning how to defend themselves—and, somewhere along the way, learning a lot about themselves too.

These benches have watched nervous first days turn into confidence.
These bags have taken thousands of punches and kicks.
And these mats have seen wins, losses, tears, laughter, exhaustion, determination, and countless moments of growth.

There is a lot of love inside this place.

We don’t know exactly what the rest of this year will bring, or where the years ahead will take us. We just know how we get there:

One day at a time.
One class at a time.
One round at a time.

We walk through the doors. We step on the mats. We keep learning. We keep growing. And we keep getting a little closer to the person we’re working to become.

For now, the room is quiet.

Soon, we get to fill it all over again.
