So grateful to have the opportunity to be home a few days for some ranch stuff! Life goes on at home while we are on the road and we are very grateful for our ranch management team. We just planted an additional 45 acres of grass and there is a whole lot more to it than just putting seed in the ground. This big rig is taking care of the Johnson grass so the Old World Bluestem can grow and thrive. Once established, we will have more hay ground. I know Kent’s dad Norman is smiling down from heaven on this latest project! Thanks to Mark, Lacey, Warren, Ev, Carolyn and Carmen our XP home team!

The sunsets are just as gorgeous as the sunrises at Ashcraft Stockdogs in Kansas! We had such a fun weekend with a great group of dog and handler teams. Big thanks to Denny and Donna for being such great hosts! Results of day two are in the comments.

This weekend finds the XP crew at the beautiful Ashcraft Ranch in northeastern Kansas. This is some of the finest cattle country in the state and we are lucky enough to be here for a cowdog trial! Both trials are sanctioned by the MSSA and USBCHA. A nice entry of top handlers will kick off in the morning with Open class first. Thank you to Denny and Donna at Ashcraft Stockdogs for being wonderful hosts!!

We have spent the last four days teaching lessons on cattle and sheep at Hillhaven Farm near Lake City, Minnesota. A small group of dedicated handlers filled all the lessons, which gave them all an opportunity to solidify what they have been working on. Several of the students here also attended the lessons up in Milaca earlier in the week. Lots of “aha” moments, laughter and hours of visiting among friends. We’ve been coming here to teach for over 20 years! A big thanks to our clinic hostess, Louanne Stacey for opening up her beautiful farm for this opportunity! We have appreciated your hospitality over the years, and look forward to continuing to work with you at your Florida location!

Every dog you train has something to teach you. Maybe it’s patience, maybe it’s how to apply and release pressure more fairly. Maybe it’s how to be humble in front of a crowd, whether you are having a stellar moment or an embarrassing one. The possibilities are endless. Be open to learning from your dog as well as training him. Own your mistakes and work on becoming a better trainer and handler. 😎
