The Chi Rho symbol is the foundation of our ranch brand, which originated over 60 years ago by Kent’s dad, Norman, and Kent’s uncle Clayton. It’s an important part of our four generations that make up the XP. All we have and all we do is because of the grace of God. Have a blessed day!

We made a fun trip yesterday out to Osborne County, Kansas so Kelli could be there to support some of her herding students, we could see some old friends and hand the first departing puppy off with her ride to her ranch.

It was a long day (420 mile round trip) but it was worth it! Wish we could have stayed longer to visit with Jerry and Sharon Rowe at Twin Creek Farm, we have known this cool couple for close to 40 years. They have quite a history in the Aussie stockdog world.

Kelli’s students? They did awesome! It was fun to watch them handle the stock through the courses. They have gathered up quite a few ribbons and awards this weekend.

Stand by, folks, for an update to find out the name and location of the ranch that will have Miss June on their cowdog crew!

Our last USBCHA National cattledog Finals entry dog story to tell is for Carey.

Anyone that knew Sara-Jo knew that Carey was her ❤️heart❤️ dog. She chose to keep him from her homebred litter she had in 2023. Carey is a distinctive looking dog, long coated, red and white, with one brown eye and one blue. Sara-Jo told us she named Carey from a 1966 Joni Mitchell song about a guy with red hair. Sara-Jo loved music and when she would make her long trips to/from trials she would crank up the 60’s and 70’s music and drive for hours.

She started Carey’s foundation at weaning and began the training process. His sire is Pace, a dog that had won USBCHA Open Reserve Cattledog in 2017 so she knew he had the genetics to be successful. She had him entered and trialing successfully at just over 18 months of age. They had some ups and downs, but what handler/dog team doesn’t.

We are finding out that Carey has a huge fan club across the US and Canada that have been following his trial career. Many of them were watching the live feed last week to see Kent and Carey have two good runs in the preliminary rounds. They were sitting 6th in the average after the first two runs, and finished 8th in the final go. It was a pretty good week for Carey. Sunday’s run was his retiring Nursery run as he ages out, but watch for him this year to continue to compete with Kent this year in Open!

JC Digr and Kent had some fantastic work on the field this week at USBCHA National Finals, scoring high enough on the combined first two rounds to qualify them for the Double Lift Open Final Go-Round. However, the USBCHA has a rule that a handler can only bring two dogs back to the Finals. Since all three of Kent’s dogs made it back to the Top Twenty, Digr was dropped from the final go round as his combined score was the lowest of all of Kent’s dogs.

We remember when Sara-Jo contacted us from the 2022 NCA National Finals in Texas. She was so excited after watching this red dog named Digr work cattle. She was really interested in buying him, but she wanted Kent to watch him work to see if he thought the dog was a good match for her. So there we were, on a cross-country flight from Boston to Seattle, watching him run at the Finals on the livestream on Kent’s phone. The conclusion? Kent told Sara-Jo he would help her if she bought Digr, though we were fairly suspicious the check had already been written.

Digr is a powerful and talented cattle dog that needed a strong handler at the wheel. Sara-Jo needed to step up her handling game if she was going to be successful with him, and step it up she did! She worked hard, and had a lot of success with Digr in trials across the US and Canada. She qualified and ran him in MSSA, USBCHA, NCA and the Canadian National Cattle Finals.

The backstory is, we picked Digr and five other dogs up from Sara-Jo two months ago, after she was diagnosed with inoperable cancer and had asked us to take her dogs in and care for them. We made the 3,100 mile round trip up to pick them up when she let us know she was ready for them to go. 💔Thankfully, the dogs knew us as we had been going up to Washington to work with Sara-Jo five times a year for the last several years. However, August and even September are not favorable months to work dogs in Oklahoma with temps exceeding 100 pretty much every day. These dogs settled in to their new lives with us amazingly, and made the transition to working with Kent pretty seamlessly, just in time for the Finals. Proof that when God makes a plan, it always works. We just have to be willing to give him the reins.

We were honored to show Digr this year at USBCHA Finals for Sara-Jo, as part of our promise to her. We told her we would not only take care of them, we would also continue their trialling careers for her.

This year is for you, Sara-Jo. You are remembered, and we celebrate you.
