📣 We're Doing Teachers a Disservice — Here's Why That Needs to Change
At EmpowerEd Rhode Island, we believe that every teacher deserves not just evaluation, but support, development, and coaching that is meaningful. Right now, too many educators are being evaluated without being given the tools or time to grow. This disconnect is not just unfair — it’s harmful.
As highlighted in a recent Marshall Memo interview with Kim Marshall, job-related stress in schools is at an all-time high. Teachers are navigating enormous challenges, yet many are still being judged by outdated or overly punitive evaluation systems. This creates a culture of pressure rather than one of professional learning.
Kim Marshall makes a powerful point: when evaluation systems are focused on support and coaching instead of compliance and punishment, teachers thrive. These systems can lower the temperature, reduce burnout, and actually improve teaching and learning. In fact, when teachers receive timely, actionable feedback and are coached consistently, they become more confident, reflective, and effective.
