LAST NIGHT, THE WORKOUT GOT HARD.
Not just physically. Mentally.
During our Girls Advanced Compete session, I intentionally put the athletes in situations that were physical, competitive and uncomfortable.
At on point, frustration boiled over.
And I'm okay with that.
Not because I want athletes upset. But because learning what to do when you're frustrated is part of becoming a basketball player.
And honestly, it's bigger than basketball.
Life isn't always going to go your way either.
On the court, the referee won't always make the call. Your shot wont always fall. Someone may be stronger or more physical. You may make three mistakes in a row.
What happens next matters.
Can you reset?
Can you control your emotions?
Can you stay engaged?
Can you keep competing when things aren't going your way?
Those are basketball skills.
They're also life skills.
I told the girls something after the workout that I believe deeply:
'I'm on you because I care about you...not because I don't'
I'm going to encourage you. Teach you. Support you.
But Im also going to demand effort, communication and competition. And when I know you don't have more to give, I'm going to ask for more.
Because lowering the standard doesn't prepare an athlete for what's next.
Eventually, the game gets harder. The competition gets better. The expectations get higher.
And eventually, life will challenge them in ways that have nothing to do with basketball.
My job isn't to make sure everything feels easy. It's to help prepare them for when it isn't.
That's why I believe this game transcends the court. We're developing basketball players, yes.
But were also developing youngh people
