Governor Walz is to announce on Monday whether Youth Sports(among others) will continue to be shut down past the current December 18th date. I have copied a post from "Let Them Play MN" page about contacting your legislator. If you want your wrestler to be on the mat, I encourage you to take action.
Thanks,
Brandon
Let Them Play MN along with several other plaintiffs filed a lawsuit today asking the court to overturn Gov. Walz’s ban on youth sports. The lawsuit proves that Walz’s decision was “arbitrary and capricious” and that he does not have rational basis for his ban because the ban was imposed without any data to support such a sweeping prohibition on youth activities. As one example, MDH data shows that there was only ONE elementary age “outbreak” (and an “outbreak” can be as few as one person getting COVID) in youth sports, yet these kids are banned from playing sports. Further, MDH data reveals that youth that play sports have LESS COVID in our schools than those that don’t play sports, which matches what research finds for COVID.
Thanks to courageous Minnesotans willing to share with us information that MDH has been unwilling to widely disclose, we are able to bring this lawsuit. It’s clear that this youth sports ban has no basis in data or science. Published science shows that kids that play sports have LESS COVID than those that don’t. This makes sense because of the structure organized sports offers and the dedication players have to complying with protocols so they can continue to play.
WE NEED YOUR HELP: If you have been waiting to take a stand for something during COVID, now is the time that your voice can be heard. Gov. Walz is asking the Legislature to extend his emergency powers for another 30 days. The last time it was extended, it passed by only 6 votes in the House. The Senate Majority Leader supports our effort, but we need the House to go along. We’re not asking the Legislature to eliminate his powers, but rather to require as part of their resolution Gov. Walz to reinstate youth sports.
CONTACT YOUR LEGISLATOR: Call and email your House representative and House Majority Leader Melissa Hortman ([email protected]) this weekend in advance of Monday’s vote. You can find your Representative here: https://www.leg.mn.gov.
Tell them that the sports protocols were working and that Gov. Walz should trust our youth athletes to continue to do what’s right. Our kids physical and mental health are too important to sacrifice on a whim without any data, and with data to the contrary.
