Some pictures from one of our classes yesterday evening. Working on some kicks and a sparring drill we call “playing for grips.” This is the type of sparring our white belts do; they’re simply getting used to being close and feeling each other move.

As students progress up the belt ranks they earn different pieces of equipment that are used for their next level of training. This allows them to build skill at their current level and raises confidence when they’ve earned their next rank (and therefore earned the right to the next part of their training).

This month our students are learning about perseverance.

They’re learning that skill takes time to build, that hard things can be overcome with consistent effort, and that just because practicing something repeatedly can become boring doesn’t mean it isn’t worth doing.

One of the ways we teach perseverance is through forms, or *poomsae* in Korean.

These are prearranged sequences of techniques that allow students to practice on their own — similar to shadowboxing, but with more structure.

Forms take time to learn, and even more time to really “get down.”

That’s exactly why they’re such a valuable tool for teaching perseverance and patience, especially for our younger students.

At some point, every student struggles with a technique or a sequence in a form.

But when they keep showing up, keep practicing, and finally get it — that’s when real confidence is built.

Not given. Earned.

What’s something you’ve had to stick with for a long time before you finally started to get it?

Not super practical, but they are fun to do! Useful for body awareness and coordination. Admittedly, Mylan hasn’t done these in a while so probably don’t look the best.
