Sneak. Snort. Scare. That's what the deer have been doing to me. They tend to sneak up quietly, snort loudly, and scare the you know what out of me.
Even though I spend a fair amount of time in the dark (haha) usually heading to or from a stand, it wasn't until I started shooting fireflies, that I realized deer see like humans see in the dark. I thought they had better night vision than us, but it doesn't appear so.
Last year, while waiting out an exposure, I heard hooves nearby. The sound of hooves kept getting closer and closer. Finally, a bit nervous, I grabbed my tiny old maglight, and spotted the deer at about 30 yards. Evidently the deer couldn't see me, or smell me at that point. That deer stopped about 75 yards beyond me, waited for a bit, then snorted, and continued snorting for at least 30 minutes. We were in the same open field, no obstructions between us, and yet the deer couldn't figure out what I was. That wouldn't happen in daylight. That deer stayed in one spot for almost an hour, before bolting away.

Hopefully something will grow in here.
